The ROTC program was created in 1916. At the time, male students took military training instead of physical education. This was due to the American involvement in World War 1 in 1917. The 75th anniversary of the ROTC program took place in 1991. The medallion itself is embossed with writing regarding the 75th anniversary. Embossed stars can also be found following the border of the medallion. | |

Sticking out of either side is a sword with the tip of the hilt sticking out on the right side and the point of the sword sticking out the left side. The top half of the sword is gold and the bottom half is purple. Above the sword is "UNI" in purple letters with gold outlines. Below the sword is "ROTC" in gold lettering. (A small section of the 'C' is covered by the guard of the sword.) Around the edge of the medallion is a thin border of gold. The sides are gold as well. The back is vertically oriented and has a gold background. The text at the top is in three lines of raised gold text. The first line is "2LT Robert J. Hibbs (MOH)." The second line is "2LT Richard B. Gienau (OIF)." The third line is "CPT Matthew G. Nielson (OND)." Below these three lines of text is the raised University of Dubuque ROTC logo (A black ring is the outer ring. Gold ring inside that with "UNIVERISTY OF DUBUQUE" at the top of the ring and "ROTC" at the bottom. Inside that is a white circle with a gold mohawked helmet facing left. Behind the helmet is two black guns - perhaps rifles - crossed behind it.). Everything on the back is surrounded by a gold border, including the protrusions that are now on the top and bottom of the medallion from the sword on the front side of the medallion. | |

The gold border and designs on the Iowa flag are all slightly raised. The sides of the medallion are gold. The back of the medallion has a black background with a thin gold border around the edges. The top line of text is "PANTHER BATTALION" in gold across the top of the medallion. Below that are 3 logos. First is the purple and gold UNI Athletics Logo ("UNI" above a panther that faces right). Second is another purple and gold logo (Purple shield with a gold sword inside pointed straight up and gold leaves on either side of the hilt at the bottom. Below is a purple and gold banner with "LUX" written on it). The third logo is for the University of Dubuque Athletics (Blue "UD" with the spartan mascot facing left so the mohawk is the outer edge of the "D"). In the bottom half of the back side of the medallion is text on three lines. Line one says "2LT Robert J. Hibbs (MOH)". The second line says "2LT Richard B. Gienau (OIF)." The third line says "CPT Matthew G. Nielson (OND)." Below the names is a gold rectangle 1 cm wide centered horizontally. |
