"V" at center of serape for head, marked by leather triangles at bottom of the V in the front and the V in the back. It is woven with cotton. Bottom is marked by tassels extending from the cotton in the body of the garment. Stripes are woven into the garment. "Grant" is written in permanent marker at the V on the inside of the garment. 282 1997.10.5 Bag Five pieces of processed bark sewed together to form shopping bag. Two pieces are side panels, one the bottom panel, 33 3/4" wide, and two pieces the handles. Top edge and bottom panel have widely spaced blanket stitch of twisted twine, which secures the unbleached muslin lining to the bag. One side panel has two motifs painted on. Each is of 2 stylized animals facing each other. Animals are drawn in black, as are the mouths and eyes. Eyes and background are red. Red background outlined in wide black line. Base pieces connected with bamboo strip threaded through with another lashed with copper wire, with another nailed on and also with copper wire. Two poles of similar girth as base are at sides on 2/3 of length. Bench arrangement of shorter segments sits on these poles. Color: TN
287 1998.1.1 Mask Long blue bull mask with 2 horns. Face is painted like a globe. There are yellow continent shapes around the eye holes and down and under the mouth, There are also black lines drawn to represent latitude and longitude lines. The mouth is stylized and resembles a duck's beak more than a bull's snout. The eyes are teardrop shape. "96" is impressed into the forehead outlined in black. On the left horn are painted three children. The first is peach colored & has yellow shorts. The middle has a white body & black shorts. The bottom child is black with red shorts. The children start at the base of the horn and go up 11 1/2". The right horn has three white birds that also take up 11 1/2" of the horn. The horns each measure 22 1/2" long. The overall color of the mask is light blue with white mixed in to make the color look like water and sky. The inside of the mask is brown and left unpainted except for the puddle of white paint around th eye. The beak is rather dusty and dirty looking. 288 1998.20.17 Pitcher Chibcha god depicted. Small hands and feet, painted orange. Large orange face is half of pitcher. Has big eyes which appear closed and lips; nose large with yellow gull's ring though it. Yellow ribbed collar around neck. Elaborate headdress with large half-circle earrings, points facing outward. Yellow lines drawn to create diamond shape. "Hat" is orange and curved like half circle, straight edge being the bottom. Lines carved crease squares and scallops across the front; has yellow flowers at top. Hat is trimmed along top with yellow border; lines cut into it, making it look like sun rays. 289 1999.1.1 Mask Carnival face mask. Has elongated snout which turns upward at the tip. Face features include cut-outs for the eyes and mouth on both sides of the face and snout respectively. These cut-outs are highlighted in sky blue. Attached on the forehead is a diamond shaped piece of cloth with green background and metallic fringes displaying a gingerbread man and pieces of candy. Each eye has a prounced ridge above and below it. Two large horns emerge from the temples of the face. Each horn is covered with hundreds of conical points. Each horn is tipped with a small metal decoration. The base coat of the mask is red, all other colors are splatter painted on it. Behind the left eye in sky-blue the initials "RD" are written. The inside is primarily brown paper with some areas having paint spatter. Inside written in blue marker "Man/Careta '99" and "2/1/99". Wire for hanging attached at top center of mask.
