161 2023-FIC-45A Scaler and Grader There are 7 components (A-G) in item 2023-FIC-45, the Scaler and Grader: 45A) A cardboard sleeve that the other components slide into. Title is "RUSSELL'S CLASSROOM SCALER AND GRADER" split on either side of a gap in the middle of the cardboard sleeve. Directions for using the scaler and grader are are on either side of the middle gap and are on both sides of the sleeve, surrounded by a two-lined rectangle, all in red font. Either side of the gap has an arrow pointing to the top of the gap from the left and right sides. The left side of the center gap has numbers 1-60 on the front and 26-74 on the back. In small print below the box on the left side of the sleeve is "Copyright, 1931, by Charles Russell" on the left and "631.1" on the right on the bottom edge of the box on the left-hand side of the gap. Below the box on the right half of the sleeve is "Patented August 12, 1930 (No. 1,772,638)" on the left, and "Printed in the United States of America" on the right. "PUBLISHED BY GINN AND COMPANY" is split between the two sides of the sleeve and each side is centered under that side's box. The top and bottom of the sleeve are held together by orange binding, like that of a book's spine. The outer edges of the sleeve have recessed sections in the center to assist with removing the materials from inside the sleeve.

It features four maps (A, B, C, and D). Map A: "Europe 1914," simply shows the borders of European countries before war began. B: "Western Fronts," shows the different forts/fortresses, the Hindenburg line, Armistice line, advance of American division, American railways in Europe, and the farthest advance of central powers. It has an inset map titled "Italian Fronts" that shows the Armistice line and the farthest advances of both the Central Powers and Allies in Italy. C: "The Nations at War," shows which countries belonged to the Central Powers and Allies, who joined later, who severed relations with the Central Powers, and who remained neutral through the entire war. The legend gives the exact dates when each country joined a side or severed relations. D: "The League of Nations," shows the original members, which countries joined later (& the year they joined), and what countries remained outside the league. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG 19 The World War" and "Maps and chart for Teaching of the Social Studies." The main map shows different land/countries colored to show which country "possessed" it, including the U.S., British empire, France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, Union of Socialist Soviet Republics (Russia), and Japan. It also marks the voyage of the battleship Oregon 1898, the land Spain ceded to the U.S. in 1899, mandated territory, and important trade routes. Map a, "Movements of Dewey's Fleet 1898," shows the route of Dewey's fleet from the Philippines to China and the Battle of Manilla. Map b, "Spanish-American War in the West Indies 1898," shows the different routes of admirals Schley, Sampson, and Cervera, and of General Miles in the Caribbean. Map c, "Panama Canal Zone," simply shows the canal and a zone surrounding it on both sides. The map folds down into its attached, white folder titled "SG20 U.S.A. Nystrom & Co., Chicago. It is split into two maps, labeled A and B. Map A, "Spanish Explorers," shows the territory in north, central, and south America that was either explored or settled by the Spanish as well as the routes (and dates) of several explorers, including Columbus, Balboa, De Leon, Cortez, Narvaez, De Vaca, Pizarro, De Soto, and Coronado. Map B, "French Explorers and Henry Hudson," shows the routes (and dates) of several French explorers, including Champlain, Nicolet, Marquette and Joliet, La Salle, Hennepin, Duluth, and Henry Hudson. This map also shows the territory of four main "Indian" groups (Algonquins, "Muskhogees", Sioux, and the Iroquois) as well as many smaller groups. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG5 SP. 168 RSC-FIC-17 Map Titled "The Movement Westward," part of the "Sanford-Gordy American History Series: with European Background and Beginnings." Published by A. J. Nystrom & Co., Chicago. It is split into two maps, labeled A and B. Map A, "Western Land Claims After the Revolution," shows boundaries of the American states, including the states that had land disputes with other countries following the revolution. It also has an inset section titled "System of United States Land Survey," which had its own inset titled "Subdivision of a Section." Map B, "Westward Migration 1775-1800," shows which areas of America were settled by 1790 versus 1800, western posts that were held by the British, General Wayne's route, General St. Clair's defeat, the Fall line, and other routes of travel. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder (only the front is left, but the map is SG10 in the series) titled "Nystrom Maps and Charts for Teaching of the Social Studies." Unfolded it measures approximately 97cm tall x 124cm wide. Undated, but the other, similar maps in the series are dated 1937.
169 RSC-FIC-18 Map 1937 map titled "Growth of the United States, 1800-1820, War of 1812," part of the "Sanford-Gordy American History Series: with European Background and Beginnings." Published by A. J. Nystrom & Co., Chicago. It shows the areas settled by 1810 compared to land settled between 1810 and 1820 in various shades of pink. Territory from the Louisiana Purchase is all in yellow, territory owned by Mexico is in orange, and Oregon Country is in yellow/pink stripes. It also shows routes of different travelers and where the British Fleets were in 1814. A black and white inset map drawn by S. Lewis titled, "Early ideas of the Far West," shows proposed land divisions west of the Mississippi River including New Albion (in current day California), New Navarre, New Biscay, and New Mexico. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG11 Growth of U. S. " and "Maps and Charts for the Teaching of the Social Studies." 170 RSC-FIC-19 Map 1937 Map titled "Growth of the Great West," part of the "Sanford-Gordy American History Series: with European Background and Beginnings." Published by A. J. Nystrom & Co., Chicago. It features two equally sized maps (labeled A and B) that compare the west of 1870 and the west "today" (1930s). Map A, "The Great West 1870," marks land in each state/territory in yellow versus land sold or otherwise disposed of in blue. It also shows different railroad lines built by 1870 that were either made on land that was forfeited or unforfeited. Map B, "The Great West Today" breaks up the states by percentage of public lands in that section. It also shows the railway lines, most of which still being in the Midwest, though western cities were starting to have more lines. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG 17 Growth of Great West" and "Maps and chart for Teaching of the Social Studies." It features one main map (labeled A) and three inset maps (labeled B, C, and D). Map A, "Settlements in the English Colonies, about 1700," compares early and later settlement areas as well as the boundaries of the Plymouth Co. (charter 1606), London Co. (charter 1606), London Co. (charter 1609), and land open to both companies between 1606 and 1609. Map B, "Early New England," shows the territory boundaries for Plymouth, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, New Haven, Martha's Vinyard, Nantucket Is., and which Indigenous tribes owned the land. It also shows the route of the Mayflower. Map C, "Early Virginia and Maryland," shows the various routes of Captain John Smith as well as different cities and rivers surrounding the Chesapeake Bay. Map D, "New Netherland," shows territory that was settled by the Dutch along the Hudson and Delaware rivers as well as important towns and cities like Brooklyn, New Amsterdam, and Hoboken. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG 7 Early Colonies" and "Maps and chart for Teaching of the Social Studies."
