36127 RSC-FIC-2 Book Book of a student's math & business notes and exercises. On the inside front cover is "Catharine Adamson's Book, May 25th 181_" (the last number is scratched out). The back pages were used as a day book noting purchases such as rice and currants from as far back as May 1783. A small light blue ribbon marked "The Pickaway County Agricultural Society 2nd Annual Fair 1853 Committeemen" is tucked between two pages near the end of the book. 
36128 RSC-FIC-3 Photograph Black and White photo of a class of 22 children and their teacher inside a schoolhouse. The photo is mounted on black cardboard. The girls are in dresses and black tights, many have big hair bows. The boys are dressed in an array of overalls, long sleeve shirts, or jackets. The chalk board is full: the top has a drawn banner of stars and American flags, the left side has a schedule or list of tasks written in regular print, the center shows a circular calendar with 4 photos in the center and "1913-1914", and the right has a few dozen words written in cursive with diacritical marks. The wall to the left is decorated with cut-out butterflies and 6-point stars. The back of the photo reads "10-21-01. From Nanelle (Lininger) Lane, granddaughter of Juanita Lininger (90+ years old) whose photos included this one. Mrs. Lininger was for many years a school nurse in the Waterloo public schools (retired in 1972)."

36134 RSC-FIC-9 Pamphlet Titled "Standard for Better School Teaching" by Chloe C. Baldridge, the director of rural education. It lists 10 standards for teachers to follow broken up into the following topic headings: professional spirit, program and classification, classroom instruction, schoolroom routine, supervision of playground, housekeeping, community activities, the teacher, pupils' attitude, and results. The bottom reads, "The purpose of these standards is to help teachers take a daily inventory of their work." Published by Lincoln School Supply Co., Lincoln Nebraska. 
36135 RSC-FIC-10 Photograph Black and white photo of thirty children and their teacher posed in front of an American flag hung on the side of their schoolhouse. The boys are all in suits with bowties and the girls are all in formal dresses. Taken circa 1895, unknown location. The back of the photo says "Bob Denlinger." Possibly related to the Denlinger family of the Zwingle school in Zwingle Iowa, Jackson County, in the 1940s and 1960s.

It features four maps (A, B, C, and D). Map A: "Europe 1914," simply shows the borders of European countries before war began. B: "Western Fronts," shows the different forts/fortresses, the Hindenburg line, Armistice line, advance of American division, American railways in Europe, and the farthest advance of central powers. It has an inset map titled "Italian Fronts" that shows the Armistice line and the farthest advances of both the Central Powers and Allies in Italy. C: "The Nations at War," shows which countries belonged to the Central Powers and Allies, who joined later, who severed relations with the Central Powers, and who remained neutral through the entire war. The legend gives the exact dates when each country joined a side or severed relations. The main map shows different land/countries colored to show which country "possessed" it, including the U.S., British empire, France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, Union of Socialist Soviet Republics (Russia), and Japan. It also marks the voyage of the battleship Oregon 1898, the land Spain ceded to the U.S. in 1899, mandated territory, and important trade routes. Map a, "Movements of Dewey's Fleet 1898," shows the route of Dewey's fleet from the Philippines to China and the Battle of Manilla. Map b, "Spanish-American War in the West Indies 1898," shows the different routes of admirals Schley, Sampson, and Cervera, and of General Miles in the Caribbean. Map A, "Spanish Explorers," shows the territory in north, central, and south America that was either explored or settled by the Spanish as well as the routes (and dates) of several explorers, including Columbus, Balboa, De Leon, Cortez, Narvaez, De Vaca, Pizarro, De Soto, and Coronado. Map B, "French Explorers and Henry Hudson," shows the routes (and dates) of several French explorers, including Champlain, Nicolet, Marquette and Joliet, La Salle, Hennepin, Duluth, and Henry Hudson. This map also shows the territory of four main "Indian" groups (Algonquins, "Muskhogees", Sioux, and the Iroquois) as well as many smaller groups. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG5 SP. It is split into two maps, labeled A and B. Map A, "Western Land Claims After the Revolution," shows boundaries of the American states, including the states that had land disputes with other countries following the revolution. It also has an inset section titled "System of United States Land Survey," which had its own inset titled "Subdivision of a Section." Map B, "Westward Migration 1775-1800," shows which areas of America were settled by 1790 versus 1800, western posts that were held by the British, General Wayne's route, General St. Clair's defeat, the Fall line, and other routes of travel. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder (only the front is left, but the map is SG10 in the series) titled "Nystrom Maps and Charts for Teaching of the Social Studies." Unfolded it measures approximately 97cm tall x 124cm wide. Undated, but the other, similar maps in the series are dated 1937.

J. Nystrom & Co., Chicago. It shows the areas settled by 1810 compared to land settled between 1810 and 1820 in various shades of pink. Territory from the Louisiana Purchase is all in yellow, territory owned by Mexico is in orange, and Oregon Country is in yellow/pink stripes. It also shows routes of different travelers and where the British Fleets were in 1814. A black and white inset map drawn by S. Lewis titled, "Early ideas of the Far West," shows proposed land divisions west of the Mississippi River including New Albion (in current day California), New Navarre, New Biscay, and New Mexico. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG11 Growth of U. S. " and "Maps and Charts for the Teaching of the Social Studies." Unfolded it measures approximately 97cm tall x 124cm wide. 
36144 RSC-FIC-19 Map 1937 Map titled "Growth of the Great West," part of the "Sanford-Gordy American History Series: with European Background and Beginnings." Published by A. J. Nystrom & Co., Chicago. It features two equally sized maps (labeled A and B) that compare the west of 1870 and the west "today" (1930s). Map A, "The Great West 1870," marks land in each state/territory in yellow versus land sold or otherwise disposed of in blue. It also shows different railroad lines built by 1870 that were either made on land that was forfeited or unforfeited. Map B, "The Great West Today" breaks up the states by percentage of public lands in that section. It also shows the railway lines, most of which still being in the Midwest, though western cities were starting to have more lines. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG 17 Growth of Great West" and "Maps and chart for Teaching of the Social Studies." It features one main map (labeled A) and three inset maps (labeled B, C, and D). Map A, "Settlements in the English Colonies, about 1700," compares early and later settlement areas as well as the boundaries of the Plymouth Co. (charter 1606), London Co. (charter 1606), London Co. (charter 1609), and land open to both companies between 1606 and 1609. Map B, "Early New England," shows the territory boundaries for Plymouth, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, New Haven, Martha's Vinyard, Nantucket Is., and which Indigenous tribes owned the land. It also shows the route of the Mayflower. Map C, "Early Virginia and Maryland," shows the various routes of Captain John Smith as well as different cities and rivers surrounding the Chesapeake Bay. Map D, "New Netherland," shows territory that was settled by the Dutch along the Hudson and Delaware rivers as well as important towns and cities like Brooklyn, New Amsterdam, and Hoboken. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG 7 Early Colonies" and "Maps and chart for Teaching of the Social Studies." 36152 RSC-FIC-27 Book Children's book titled "First Week's at School," published by Ginn & Co. (covers) and J. S. Cushing & Co., Boston. Softback, red and yellow covers, bound with thread, forty-eight pages. The first page, in handwriting, read "Robert Willoughby Collins, 1057 Madison Ave., Columbus, Ohio. September 19th. 1895." The book was a primer for children during their first weeks at school. It has exercises for reading, writing, numbers, colors, and music. Each page illustrations, some in color.

To the left of the photo its reads, "Let order o'er you time preside, And method all your business guide." The right-side reads, "Barly begin and end your toil; Nor let great tasks your hands embroil."
36154 RSC-FIC-29 Card Merit card for Mary Simpson from her teacher, J. C. Swing. The front has a pink decorative border on the left and right sides and an illustration of a woman in a pink dress reading with two children on a green hill. All coloring was done post printing and often goes outside the image's lines. The back reads, "Head of class No. 2 4 times."

The card has a thin, blue border, floral designs, and a heart in the center around the words "Up in the morning early, By daylight's earliest ray, With our books prepared to study The lessons of the day." In the floral design, the flower are colored red and the vines green, but all coloring was done post printing and loosely follows the lines of the illustration. 
36156 RSC-FIC-31 Card Merit card for Louis Wareham from the teacher, M. J. Blackword. The very bottom of the card reads "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1871 by Gibson & Co. in the Office of the Librarian of Congress." The card is decorated with purple ink, an illustration of a child holding a flower on either side, and an illustration of a girl sitting against a tree looking at a farm in the center. 
36157 RSC-FIC-32 Card Merit card for Harriet Simpson from the teacher, Letty A. Elrod. The left side features an illustration a woman holding a sword and a scale. The right shows a barefoot woman with arm bands and a feathered headdress. Under this is "Cayudutta, Drawn & Engraved." The center has a smaller illustration of a someone in a crown talking with someone sitting in a cloud as well as a poem that reads, "Mid all life's scenes, 'mid weal and woe. Mid days of mirth and sadness, Where'er thy wandering footsteps go. Oh! think how transcient here below, Thy sorrow or thy gladness." All illustrations were colored with red and green post-printing and do not follow the lines. Possibly from New York.

The flowers are red, and a few leaves are colored green, but it was done post-printing and did not follow the design's lines. The center has a religious poem.

Each page has a Bible verse that begins with a certain letter of the alphabet paired with an illustration depicting and item or concept from the verse. The letter and the bible verse were printed in either red or green ink; all other text is black. The covers are decorated in a red and blue geometric design and the edges of the pages are gold. Softback, 32 pages, bound with thread. 
36160 RSC-FIC-35 Booklet Titled "The Village School: From "L'Ecole de Valdamont,," published by the American Tract Society, 150 Nassau-St., New York. The covers are green with border illustrations of two children holding vases of plants and a center picture of a family kneeling at a table where the father is reading from a book.  Handwritten on the front cover is "1899" and "Mary E. Martin," but it's been crossed out. Inside the front cover is handwriting that reads, "Presented to Mary E. Martin by her cousin Charlott Talbot. Marin Shaws." Handwriting on the opposite page reads, "Marin Shaw Cuher 1899." The back cover notes the booklet cost 2 1/2 cents. Softback, thirty-two pages, bound with thread.
