Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

4120	1989.60.0012	Basket	Birch bark bottom.
4121	1989.60.10	Hook, Halibut	Object is made of wood, natural fiber rope and string, and metals. It is carved with a seal decoration. It is formed in a "V" shape, with an inward protruding metal spike. Much of the artifact is held together by natural fiber string. Both string and metal nails are used to hold both sides of the wooden "V" together. The piece has a knotted rope loop attached through a hole through its side.
4122	1989.60.11	Basket	Tlingit woven basket made of either spruce root or flat twisted cedar bark cordage. Made by the women of the tribe, this basket is an open top design with red and black geometric designs running across the middle of the basket.
4123	1990.21.0001	Instrument, musical	Priest's string instrument and bow. Single string atonal instrument. a. Instrument b. Bow. Sound box is cube-shaped with animal hide wrapped around. Long piece of wood through middle of box with a tuning peg at the opposite end of box. String attached to peg that runs the length of the instrument and is suspended above the box by a v-shaped piece of wood. The bow is an arched piece of wood with string attached at both ends. Color: TN, BR, BK
4124	1990.21.0003	Spear	Ceremonial spear, dual tines. Stamped with circular pattern. Midway down the shaft is a 4 posted opening followed by a continuation of the circular pattern down the remainder of the shaft. The bottom part of the shaft is designed for insertion of a staff.
4125	1990.21.0004	Burner, incense	From Coptic Christian Church in Addis Ababa. Censer is held by four twisted wire ropes attached to a bell-shaped handle. Each wire has five bells attached to it. The bottom portion of the censer has a ring at each corner for attaching a single bell.
4126	1990.21.0008	Plate, communion	Communion plate. Concave side is engraved with cat-like heads and geometric patterns. The rim is scalloped.
4127	1990.21.0016	Doll	Two parts. a. Female carrying doll baby on her back. Body of brown felt is decorated with bead work of green, white and orange. Clothing is made of black, orange and brown felt. An orange felt drape and bead shawl hold the baby onto her back. b. Doll baby being carried in sling around mother doll's back. Body of brown felt, black bead work for hair, white bead work earrings.
4128	1990.21.0038	Goblet	Base has four ring grooves; cup has 4 grooves at top and 3 at the bottom; stem has 2 groups of 3 grooves each.
4129	1990.21.0039	Goblet	Tan streaks in stem and base. Ring grooves: cup, 4 at top (one incomplete) and 3 at bottom; stem, 2 groups of 3 and 1 of 1; base, 5; 3 are incomplete.

4131	1990.21.0041	Cup	Cup for goblet. 4 grooves at top, 3 at bottom. The top has a 1" long crack that runs down through the grooves. White streaks.

4133	1990.21.0043	Cup	Small goblet shaped cup, with no base, made out of tan and brown horn.
4134	1990.21.0044	Goblet	Horn made into a small goblet. Grey/black with tan streaks. 2 grooves cut in top and 2 in bottom of the cup.

4143	1990.21.0060	Tray	Basketry tray with domed center. Outer rim is edged with an open zig-zag weaving. Color: TN,RD,BL-GR,BK
4144	1990.21.0061	Tray	Zig-zag weave worked around the rim. Lettering covers one side of interior; a gold star fills the center and a crescent shape decorates the other side of the interior. Color: ML

4153	1990.21.100	Pendant	Square patterned pendant meant to be worn on a necklace. There is a loop at the top of the pendant that is attached to a trapezoid.
