Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

Torso ornament of orange & brown beads, natural wood cylinders and multi-colored feathers, woven in open square pattern with horizontal rows of orange & blue beads, feathers along one side with some leather missing. Along one side a double row of orange and brown beads with larger brown beads between, on other side row of larger brown beads attached to ornament with wood cylinder, 2 strings on each end of one side with brown bead and both strings 11" long, Length of ornament without strings is 40 1/2" long and 15" wide. 3511 1983.22.1 Mask This mask is from Sri Lanka. It is probably a Raksha mask, which is used in festivals and cultural dances in Sri Lanka. This mask sports a turban on the head of the mask, patterned in diagonal red lines and green crosses. The face of the mask has two large bulging eyes that are painted yellow, red, and black. The mask has high eyebrows painted thinly over the eyes. There are eye slits underneath the eyes. The nose of the mask is large and features painted lines and nostrils. The mouth dons two large white buck teeth surrounded by the rest of the pink lips and mouth. There is a large black mustache with yellow lines painted over it above the mouth. The sides of the mask are present with multiple carving marks, almost like a turtle shell. 1983.22.1 (Mask) image

3520 1983.6.1 Mask Ritual "Moor" mask, red face with black mustache, eyebrows and beard which curls up and out at the chin. Small mouth with 8 teeth. Almond shaped eyes with black centers and small black eyelashes. Two 'sight' holes beneath each prominent eyebrow. Small holes on both sides and top center. This is a character from the Dance of the Moors and Christians, representing Moor. These masks are typically painted red, with gold or white horizontal bars projecting from the brows and cheeks, and a curly or upturned beard. 1983.6.1 (Mask) image
3521 1983.6.2 Mask This is a Mexican "Parrot" mask that might have been used in rituals. The mask is painted with different shades of green in a mottled pattern. There are two circular eye holes in different shapes and sizes, and one oval mouth that is open and the lips are painted red. The nose of the mask is long and down curved. There is a small hole in the center of the forehead and two holes on each side of the masks on the cheeks. 3523 1983.6.4 Mask This is a Mexican "Scorpion" mask. It is portraying a human but contains exaggerated features. This mask features blue eyes that bulge out from the socket, with eyeholes near the eyebrow for the mask wearer to see. There are five jutting roots of the beard and two roots from the mustache, all are brown and black in color. The face has red cheeks and a red nose, with an open downturned mouth. 3524 1983.6.5 Mask This is a Mexican "chivo" or goat mask. It is used for a ritual dance called the Dance of the Goats. This mask has a human face with pink skin, a black beard, and red cheeks. There are two eye slits with painted eyelashes. There is a carved open smile with red paint on the lips for the mouth. The mask contains a long curling nose that is painted yellow, red and green. The mask also features two horns on the side of the mask which are painted appropriately. Between the two horns is a length of string that has green, red, and brown ribbons hanging vertically. There is a hole in the center of the forehead and one hole on each side of the mask. 1983.6.5 (Mask) image
3525 1983.6.6 Mask This mask is shaped like a human face. The entire mask is painted black, except for the inside. There are two eye holes painted white on the top lid and painted pink on the bottom line. The cheeks of the mask are painted pink. There is a block nose that ends in a mustache made of raffia. The raffia also joins the chin for a small beard. The chin points out. The mouth is a long and thin carved shape with down turned lips. Some white teeth are visible if one looks through the mustache. 3526 1983.6.7 Mask This is a Mexican "Scorpion" mask. This mask portrays a human face with normal features. There is a set of blue eyes with eye slits below the eyebrow for the mask wearer to see. The nose juts out and has been carved well as the nostrils are see through. The skin of the mask is painted light pink and the cheeks of the mask have been painted red. The lips form a circle and have been painted red. There are 9 jutting roots from the sides and chin of the mask, forming curling red and black horns. 3527 1983.6.8 Mask This is a Mexican mask that could have belonged in the Dance of the Conquest, a traditional dance that reenacts invasions and conversions of the native populations. This mask has vertical lines of red, black, yellow and green. There are two curling horns near the temple of the mask that are also colored. There is a curling nose that is painted too. The mouth is a carved out oval, and above the mouth is a mustache made of beige and black colored straw material. The mask is carved out of wood and contains some damage to the paint.
3528 1983.6.9 Mask Red face ritual mask with very long nose. Eyebrows, mustache, underside of nose, cheeks and chin are gold with black highlights. Eyes are white with blue centers and black pupils with radiating lines. Black eyelashes highlight eyes. Mouth is small downward crescent. Cutout sight holes exist below prominent eyebrows on either side of nose. Small holes on both sides and top center. This is a character from the Dance of the Moors and Christians, representing Moor. 3534 1983.9.2 Mask This is a mask from Guatemala. It is large and contains two parts. The first part of the mask is the devil face. The mask shows a devil character painted in red and black. The devil has two blue eyes lined with red paint and black eye lashes. The nose of the devil is large and carved out nostrils are present, painted red. There is a small thin black mustache. The mouth of the devil is very large and open. It is showing all of its teeth, painted white, and the lips are painted red. There is a tongue in the center of the mouth painted red with a black line on it. The devil has a black beard and hair, carved out of the wood and painted black. The second part of the mask is a gray deer on top of the head of the devil. The deer has two blue eyes lined with red paint. Its snout is adorned with some black lines and the mouth of the deer is barely open but red paint can be seen in the mouth and in the nostrils. The deer has two antlers that are thick and painted white, carved from the same wood. The deer and devil both have carved ears with black lines in them. 1983.9.2 (Mask) image

3541 1984.11.5 Moccasin Child's moccasin. Handmade. Tongue, cuff, sole and strap are buckskin. Moccasin is made of three separate pieces; the tongue, cuff, and sole. The cuff's edge has a zig-zag pattern. Buckskin strap runs through the cuff. Design made out of glass beads on the tongue. Black, blue, red, yellow and white beads are used. Color: BR,BK,BL,RD,ML
3542 1984.11.6 Moccasin Handmade. Pair of attached buckskin moccasins for doll's feet. Moccasins are made of three separate pieces; the tongue, cuff, and sole. 3543 1984.11.7 Rattle Handmade, buckskin rattle with a buckskin tassel and a bead design. A row of red and yellow beads decorate the top of the rattle. A design made of red, yellow and blue beads decorates the tassel at the end of the rattle. There is a long wrapped chain of blue and yellow beads around the handle. Color: BR,RD,YL,BL
