Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

2815 1974.23.8 Brick Brick, made by Israelites while working as slaves for the pharaoh of Egypt before the time of Christ. This brick used to be in the British Museum (London). My paternal grandfather, who put a good many miles behind him, had acquired some extraordinary scarab amulets and took them to the museum to see whether they wanted them for the Egyptology section. They offered to either purchase them, or exchange them for something else. My grandfather chose to take this brick. (Noted by Harry Fields in his donation letter in 1974).  1974.23.8 (Brick) image

2819 1974.30.12 Pin Sterling silver orchid with emerald, there were possibly two at one point but the top one appears to be missing. Tarnished at leaf points.
2820 1974.30.13 Pin Sterling silver oval ring pin with triangular-shaped design around outside. In interior of ring is a figure, possibly a god holding what looks like a pail. Has a c-loop to hang from a chain or a pin in back to fasten as broach.
2821 1974.30.14 Pin Burro with crude emerald on burro's back; farmer behind burro has circular flat crude emerald on farmer's back.
2822 1974.30.15 Idol Brass-plated copper. Polished front. Dull back. Hanging loop built into back of head. It is a larger version of an pendant from Tolima. They had anthropomorphic properties and were used to express harmony and beauty. It was common for pendants to have bilateral tails.
2823 1974.30.17 Pendant, replica Frog design in gold from necklace of small frogs from Quimbaya Archaeological Area. Encased in clear plastic with black background. Back has information in Spanish, English, and French with a small "9" written in ink on the lower proper left corner. Pendants were used to express beauty and harmony.
2824 1974.30.18 Ring, nose, replica Reproduction of Tairona cast or "false" filigree nose ring. Gold reproduction imbedded in clear yellow plastic against black background. Looks like a butterfly with an arrow pointing upwards in the middle. These were meant to be anthropomorphic and bilateral. Information is written on the back in Spanish, English, and French. Has a small "12" written in ink on the proper left on the lower back of the artifact.
2825 1974.30.19 Pendant, replica Reproduction of an anthropomorphic pendant made by the lost wax method from the Tolima Archaeological Area. Gold reproduction embedded in clear yellow plastic against black background. Pendants were used to express beauty and harmony, often showing figures with both human and animal traits. It is common to see the tail displayed in a bilateral fashion. Plastic has some scratches on it and a chip missing from the proper bottom right side. There is a white "2" painted on the bottom proper right side. Back has information written in Spanish, English, and French.

Made to look like a pendant from the Tolima Archaeological Area. Pendants were made to represent beauty and harmony, often expressing animal and human features. It is not uncommon to see a tail depicted bilaterally.

Pink trim also around sleeves, bottom, and up side slashes of skirt. 4 frog closures shutting from bottom of left-hand collar across to right hand side of dress just under arm pit. Basket moves from flat position to "bowl" shape by swinging on 2 screws attaching frame to basket.
