Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

2428 1972.46.12 Tray Four pieces of bamboo each 6 5/8" long and slightly curved at each end are fastened together. Small pieces of bamboo the inner pieces with 2 outer curved pieces of bamboo. All six pieces are joined together at the top and bottom. The bamboo pieces separate the six near the middle.

2432 1972.46.17 Bowl Two crossed black lines running vertically placed in five places around the bowl. Three blue flower-like designs are spaced between the pairs of black lines. The inside is white with a blue rim 1/4" wide around the very top. Bowl is 2 /58" diameter at the bottom and 5 5/8" in diameter at the top. The 5" lid has the same design as the bowl. 2433 1972.46.18 Bowl Three blue bands 1/4' wide. Between the bands are blue designs. The inside of the bowl is white. The lid has the same design as the bowl. It is 4 1/4" diameter. Other Description: Closed. Geometric design on white background on upper third. Color: TN,BR,WH,RD -Heavily damaged, broken into many shards that have been glued back into place meticulously with an unknown adhesive.
