Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

On two sides is approximately 1 1/2" of dark blue fringe. Inward from fringe is 4" pattern of five 6-sided geometric figures, each figure alternating from green to red outlines. 2637 1973.54.3.1 Doll Man with bundle. Wearing blue jeans, printed green, yellow, brown, cream and orange short-sleeved top with a yellow scarf around neck and shoulders and also wearing blue cloth headscarf. Face is made of dark brown material. Hands and feet of light brown material. Face is made of stitiching different colored thread as mouth, eyes, nose, and eyebrows. Right arm is grasping bundle which is being carried on his shoulder. He appears to be walking, one foot in front of the other. Nailed down to the wood stand with 2 nails; one through each foot. b. 2640 1973.54.3.4 Tray Shape of a tulip, except instead of rounded bottom it goes out to points on each side. Has short handle at one end and at the opposite end comes to three triangular points. Shiny. Lacquered finish. Color: BR,TN
2641 1973.54.3.5 Drum Main body is painted with designs. Around the bottom are four horizontal lines of red, yellow, red, yellow; then begins painted design of two grey snakes surrounded by multi-colored dots, next to snakes; (turning object to the left) is painting of rooster head, the word Haiti, then some sort of symbol like a mask with face painted on it. Top of drum is made of animal hide and skin. Skin on top is pulled tightly over drum with all animal hair removed. Over the sides of the drum the hide is pulled and tacked down by inserting four wood sticks into drum. The animal hair remains on the skin on sides of drum. 2645 1973.54.5.5 Knife, pocket Handcrafted. Carved wooden handle and folding blade. Criss-cross design carved on handle dyed with dark brown. Where knife blade is connected, piece of metal goes around outside of handle and nail type piece is inserted through knife blade. When blade is folded it still stands out from handle; isn't completely hidden.
2646 1973.54.6.1 Bracelet Filigree. Hinged in two places; one of the hinges is removable. Hinge is hooked on with chain so it won't be lost when arm is inserted. 2647 1973.54.6.2 Necklace Beaded in black and white. Double strand comes together with large yellow bead; from this bead 8 strands of black beads fan out to form top of 1 5/8" x 1 5/8" square of beaded white and black beads. This square is trimmed with 8 small strings of white beads. One of these small strands contains one black bead; otherwise all strands are completely white. At opposite end there is 3" of plain string white knot at end where necklace is closed. Number on yellow bead. Color: BK,WH
2648 1973.57 Rug, prayer Portrait of "Ferdosi", an ancient poet. Carpet is trimmed with fringe around rop and bottom. Border made of natural color yarn. Woven pattern border around picture varies in size; approx. 2 1/2" around top and both sides and 2" around bottom. "Ferdosi" is clad in brown cloak and white and grey flowing turban wrapped around head and left shoulder. Figure has black beard and various colors woven in for facial features. Dark and light greens make up background for poet, in which his name is written in brown letters. The weaver did such a neat job the carpet is reversible, turning the figure the opposite way. "Ferdosi" is woven facing the right.
2649 1973.58.1 Figurine A small camel toy, stitched shut with yellow thread, with eyes painted on and small ears sewed on. Stands on all four feet with head slightly turned. On far back of camel held on by a small metal dowel is a woman's head with painted facial features. Head is clad in white head scarf with yellow see-through veil covering mouth and cheeks. 2651 1973.60 Mug King Edward VIII coronation mug. On front, in oval is portrait of King Edward facing left with orange colored background. Around oval is second oval with the writing "hon soit que Mal y Pense" on blue background. Around this are oak leaves with acorns on them. Under this portrait are the words "Dieu et Mon Droit"; on back is a crown under which a large E small VIII in Roman numerals and large R are printed. Two ridges are embedded around bottom of cup. 2685 1974.21.1.3 Flute Carved wood, round flute with two bands of carved designs 1" below air hole at top. Top band has carved lines between 2 lines with carvings alternating from top and bottom lines. Second band of designs, geometric figures. Both bands do not extend into back. Along both sides at bottom there are 2 parallel carved lines extending 8 1/2" from bottom of flute on each side. Between lines are carved rectangular lines wider separated by uncarved space. "Eye of God" in wool. 5" square with red tassel at each corner extending 1" beyond square. 1/4" brass square at center surrounded by rows of purple, green, turquoise yarn for a depth of 1 1/8" from eye. Remaining 1 1/8" yarn is yellow, red, orange and outer rows again yellow. Chevron pattern in outer edge. On back ribs covered with yarn run from corner diagonally to opposite corner. 2688 1974.21.2.1 Carving Brown owl carved from a single piece of wood. It has two perked up ears and very large eyes, it is perched on a base of solid wood. The carving is detailed and carefully done. On the bottom of the base there is a white sticker that reads "Imports BIG G Made in Ecuador" in blue font.
2689 1974.21.2.2 Flute Large bamboo flute. 7 holes are carved into the top, 6 of them grouped a sixth of the way in, closest to the open end. The inside is hollow. The hole that stands alone is closest to the closed end of the flute and has an etching in of 4 triangles across a straight line carved next to it. The closed end is not part of the original bamboo, but rather was placed there after carving.
