Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

3729 1989.34 Mask "Rangda" mask with fiber hair, prominent eyes, nose, fangs and long textile tounge. Face is white, gold, red and black with bulging eyes and nostrils. Two large bottom fangs protrude as do two large top fangs and incisors. A faded pinkish tounge decorated with three sets of gold cutout paper and mirrors come out of mouth. Gold paper cutouts attached to and extend below chin. Red paper on top forms 'fire-like' crest. Fiber hair is attached to face mask and hangs down several feet. The hair has a frayed apperence produced using a knotting technique. Color: WH,BK,YL,RD
