Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

4275 1990.3.1 Paddle Miniature woman's wooden Irian Jaya/Indonesia paddle. Made of one piece of wood. Handle is 8" long and 1 1/4" in diameter. Worn place in handle where a hand fits almost exactly. Where the handle ends, there are 3 cut rings around the upper portion of the shaft. This area of the shaft is narrower than the handle. It expands to one inch diameter in the middle before it narrows again at the base of the shaft. Gives indication of having been painted at one time and may have been decorated as well. At the meeting of the shaft and the blade, there is a cut to denote the change. The blade flares from one and one-third inches wide to four and one-fourth inches before it narrows to a point, the tip of which is absent, of approximately a quarter of an inch.
