Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

The bottome row is opposite of the top. 1 leaf has crved sections, while other has jagged. The full square of 4 leaves are colored with YL and BL, alternating one after another. 6618 2009.6.0001 Drum Hourglass shaped drum with handles on each side. The middle of the drum is black and the handles are also black. One handle is plain and the other is curvy and forms small holes where the bottom of the curves meet the drum body. The top of the drum is made of opaque reptile skin stretched over and two rows of twine around the edge. The drum is hollow on the inside. On both the top, bottom and around the center are orange and white geometric paintings on a black background. The rest of the drum is tan colored. Color: TN, BK, WH, OR
6619 2009.6.0005 Spear Wooden (bamboo?) spear. The spear head is single and flat on both sides. It is connected to the handle with hardened black puddy and woven grass. There are bumps in the wood all the way up the handle. Where the handle is attatched to the spearhead are black markings all around the handle. The bottom of one side of the spearhead is raised. 6620 2009.6.0006 Spear Wood (bamboo?) spear. Very similar to 2009.6.5. The spear head is flat and double sided. One edge is raised slightly. The spearhead is connected to the handle with black puddy and woven grass. Underneath the woven grass are small black drawings. There are bumps along the entire length of the handle. 6621 2009.6.0007 Spear Wood (bamboo?) spear. The spearhead is four pronged. Each prong is curved in the center. The head is attatched from the handle with woven grass and dried black puddy. 6622 2009.6.0008 Spear Wooden (bamboo?) spear. Spearhead consists of five prongs very close together. The top of each prong is slightly curved. 6624 2009.6.0010 Spear Tan handle with brown spearhead. Spearhead has black marks on it and is formed in sections much like a Christmas tree. 6626 2009.6.0012 Bow Bow made of brown wood; tan strip is the string. The string is attatched to the bow with large strips of wood knotted together. The string is no longer attatched to the handle and one large piece of knotted wood has popped off. The handle is very smooth and has pointed tips at each end to make it easy to attach and unattatch the string. Color: BN, TN
6627 2009.6.0018 Steamer Cylandrical reed rice steamer consisting of two parts. The bottom is made of several dark pieces woven together. The top part is a lighter colored smaller cylinder made from a single piece of reed. Inside, the bottom is made of larger reed woven together with four pieces of string tied together to form a diamond. The strings are under tension. The top part can be removed and is woven together in a similar fashion to the darker bottom piece. The very bottom of the dark piece is also large reed woven together. 6628 2009.6.0019 Tray, Serving Tray made from woven reeds and wood. Base is light colored large piece of wood. The center contains arched pieces of dark wood with light wood strips going around horizontally. There is also a horizontal strip around the base. The tray platform is made of large reed pieces tightly woven together surrounded by wicker also closely woven together. The weaving on the platform forms a square shape. Color: TN
6629 2009.6.0020 Bag Woven reed bag. Very tightly woven with frayed left and right sides. The handles are braided with a knot in the middle. The knot also has frayed edges coming off the top. The edges are also braided before fraying. Some of the weaving on the bottom is not as tight and there are small holes where the reeds intersect. The top is the most closely woven. Color: TN
6630 2009.6.0022 Ball Wood woven into a ball. There are small spaces forming triangles in between the strips of wood. The strips of wood are made by four smaller strips of rounded wood. Ball is very light weight and hollow. The wood is mostly light brown with some dark brown pieces. Similar to 2009.6.23 Color: BN

6633 2009.6.14 Crossbow Wooden crossbow with string across the top from Laos. Wood is dark brown. The rope is attached to the horizontal piece of the cross. Near the center of the vertical piece of the cross there is a small rotating piece attached with a wooden screw. Near the top of the rotating piece is a groove on the vertical piece of the cross. 6634 2009.6.15 Quiver Six parts: quiver and arrows. A.) Wooden quiver with rope attatched at each end to carry. There are tan and brown candy cane stripes all the way down the quiver. At the top is a hole for small arrows to be set inside and on the bottom is a divet. B.-F.) Small arrows inside the quiver. Each is tan in color with pointed ends. The opposite end has a small wooden tail with black material tying it together. The pointed ends are fairly blunt. 14 1/2" long Color: TN, BN
6635 2009.6.16 Basket Large brown basket with two shoulder straps. The straps can be adjusted by re-tying the large knot in the front. There are four small legs on the bottom of the basket. There are vertical pertruding pieces all the way around the basket as well as a single horizontal strip about a 1/4 of the way down from the top. Flat area with straps for the back. Color: BN
6636 2009.6.17 Pot Aluminum Rice Pot A.) Silver metal pot with an hourglass shape. The bottom of the pot has four rings on the bottom with a circle in the middle. In the circle is engraved "Car Brand" "Thailand" "22 c/m". There is also a car engraved on it. Very light weight and shiney. B.) Woven light colored basket. Rounded bottom and large opening on the top. Not as tightly woven at the bottom. Color: SL, TN
6637 2009.6.2 Bag Tan colored bag made of twine. The twine is loosely woven together to form a square shaped bag with rounded corners. The edging along the opening of the bag and on the handle are more tightly woven together. The main part of the bag is very stretchy. Very plain. Color: TN
6638 2009.6.21 Flute Large wooden flute. Wood appears to be bamboo. In a pan flute shape with double layer staggered pieces. All the wooden pieces are round and hollowed. There is a large dark brown piece with carvings on one end and a hole in the other. This is attatched to the bamboo pieces with black puddy. There are other holes near the dark brown piece where fingers are placed to play different notes. Three yellow strings wrapped around at top, middle, and bottom. A pink ribbon tied to the top and bottom strings for a handle. Color: TN
6639 2009.6.26 Bottle Brown hollow gourd. The bottom is wide and round. The second layer is much less wide and leads to a very short piece to pit a mouth around. Shape similar to a snowman. Between the bottom and second lair is a dark fabric rope tied around the gourd in order to hold onto it easier. Sketch on catalog sheet. Color: BN
6640 2009.6.27 Pipe Cylandrical bamboo pipe with small pertruding piece that is 3 1/2" long. There is a hole in the top and the bottom of the pipe. The hole from the top goes about 3/4 of the way down. The bottom hole is closed with a barrier about 1/4 of the way up. The pertruding piece is hollow and attatched to the larger piece through a hole. On the top half of the pipe are light geometric carvings; some of which are animals. Color: TN

A diamond shape is repeated at the top of the necklace in which red and yellow diamonds are repeated along with 3 blue and one green diamond.
