6407 2006.9.1 Fetish Small figurine of carved ivory. The figurine is of a human female in standing position with arms to the side. The coloration of the figurine varies in areas. Small ivory figurine of a human/person. Their hands are connected in front of them. They are in a standing position. Facial features are not defined and there is no hair or clothing on the figurine. The head is very round. Sent to UNI from Pagosa Springs, CO. Mysterious use historically: some think they were used as good luck charms while hunting, others think they were used as game pieces. Some people believed the figurines to be connected to life and death. Within Inuit culture and beliefs, each living thing has a tarniq, a soul, that consists of a miniature image of that living thing. The miniature image of the living thing produces the living thing itself. Most modern Inuit are now Christian and reject the idea of fetish figurines being used as good luck charms or protection amulets. Would be carried with them on their person. The Inuit were nomadic, and therefore they carried with them what they could. To carry a personal item such as a fetish figure indicated wealth and status. This nomadic lifestyle is also the reason for the small size of the figurines. Some fetish figurines have holes, indicating they were worn as jewelry. Fetish figurines could have been used as toys, to teach children how to be adults, and therefore would have symbolized transformation. 2006.9.1 (Fetish) image

6496 2008.2.0001 Hat A large circular shape, there is about a 3" patchwork pattern alternating between plain and floral cloth all the way around the rim. An inch of geometric bead patterns are above that every 10 1/2" around there is a beaded leaf of palm tree shape. A large RD cross shape comes down from the middle of the hat, the 4 points resemble a fleur de lis, the cross is bordered by alternating YL and BK beads. The very point has 8 beaded stings of various colors. 3 have bells, one has a metal circle, 2 have small bits of cloth, one has no adornment. About 2 1/4" from these strings is a beaded circle of BL, YL, and WH Color: RD, BL, YL, GR
6497 2008.2.0002 Hat A large circle mostly RD and light BL, theres about a 2" wide strip of alternating cloth colors all the way around the bottom edge about every 8.5" a plant design occurs. Next a large RD x shape takes up most of the hats middle, the x shape has intricatly curving points and is boardered in alternating BK and WH. One of the 4 points has about 5" of BL beads instead of BK one a tringaular point, a WH, BK, and YL cross shape is in the middle of each of the large X's points and above these cross shapes are much smaller crosses in GR and YL, also between the x pionts are alternating colors connecting them about half way up their points. On the hats very tip is a large 8 pointed star finged with small beaded portions of string. The inside of the star is beaded in geometric patterns of various colors in the very middle. 7 strings of beads about 3" long. Color: RD, BL, YL, WH 2008.2.0002 (Hat) image
6498 2008.2.0003 Hat A large circle predominantly YL. 3" wide strip of cloth of alternating solid colors. 6 strips, about 5.5" long, contain 4 beaded 8 sided stars. One strip is about 5" long and has 3 stars. One strip has name of maker, NYiPAN AK LABANG. Above these strips is 1" of beaded fringe coming from triangles pointing down. 1/3" of green beads are above this and circle all the way around, above this a circle of YL beads. 1/2" of beaded triangles are above these two strips of beads and alternate colors. Above this is 3 1/2" of yellow beaded background with 10 geometric human figures. Below the figures are small beaded triangles. Above this, a circle about 4.5" in diameter, with various colored beads as border. On the top a 10 pointed star shape, center of star is a circle with diameter of 1.5". At very top are 8 beaded strings, 3" long. About half have small metal bells, while other half have small disks. Color: BL, RD, YL, GR
