Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

6502 2008.2.13 Dart Blowgun dart with thin shaft-darker brown and is a little over 8 1/2". Shaft comes to a sharp point. Head of dart is light brown and 1/2" long and wider than the shaft. Head has a hole going through middle where shaft fits into and sticks out a bit on the other side. Color: BR
6503 2008.2.4 Sword A. Blade is one sided with black scratches and marks on both sides. Handle then has 2 1/2" of woven wicker then 3 1/4" of carved wood. Animal head on hilt. B. Front of sheath is elaborately decorated with wicker and wood carvings. Middle section has a wicker ball that sticks out 3/4". Different shades of brown ranging from light brown to reddish brown. On reverse side of sheath, a belt loop that's woven wicker, it's 17" long. There's a piece of wood that's attached and it's 18" long. Color: BR, BK
6504 2008.2.5 Dart Thin shaft-dark brown that's a little over 8 1/2". Shaft comes to a sharp point. Head of dart is light brown and 1/2" long and wider than the shaft. Head has a hole going through the middle where shaft fits into and sticks out a bit on the other side. Color: BR
6505 2008.2.6 Blowgun The wooden tube has a 1/4" tube wide hole that goes, from end to end, for the dart. On one of the ends is a blade, that is attached with woven wood, which is 5 1/2" long. Neck area is carved into four bands. Long beak; open mouth. Raffia attatched around top of mask with varying lengths of raffia. Scrapes and wear on the beak area, nose worn smooth of pigment. 6510 2008.4.0002 Mask Large mask used for Poro rituals, a secret society initiation for men. The mask has a protruding forehead and nose. Very small eyes. 3 Horns on top, center horn split at top. Carved striations in horns. Triangle pattern carved into forehead. Large X pattern carved on face, holes carved around edge of mask for raffia/costume attachment, no raffia is present. 6511 2008.4.0003 Mask Flat board mask with large horns curve up on sides. 3 smaller nodules rise between 2 horns. Cut pieces of rope attached to raised circle on front of mask. Nose or chin carved from circle. Raised circle is covered in cloth or canvas attached to wood. Dings and scrapes on mask. Right front side has area rubbed free of pigment. Scrape on back left side. 6512 2008.4.0004 Mask Poro mask used for the initiation into a secret society. Rounded protruding forehead. Three horns, center split "v" shaped. Large nose, small rounded eyes. Holes carved for costume raffia attachment. No scarification. Nostrils are carved into the nose. Many gouges in face-several cracks in face. Damage above both eyes. Crack above left eye on forehead. 6513 2008.4.0005 Mask, Ritual Mask used for Poro secret society initiation for Loma men. Mask with curving horns with center carving. Rectangular pattern carved into center and in band along forehead. There are two grooves carved above eyes. The forehead is carved into two areas. The facial features exhibit a triangular shaped nose, half-moon ears, and slit eyes and mouth. Two metal plates on cheeks and one diamond shape on chin. Light surface wear, dirt, and scratches. Mask face is painted brown/red. 5 part hair painted black, eyes, lips, eyebrows lined in black. Long, thin nose. Carved portion remains attached to rough, uncarved wood. 6520 2008.4.0014 Mask Kpan mask. Striated three part hair. Center portion raised, 2 side portions end in upward slope. Zig-zag pattern along hairline in 3 half circle pattern. Raised smooth line follows zig-zag. White lines painted to follow raised line. Single raised nodule on forehead. One nodule carved above the outside corner of the eyes. 6 carved rectangular scar marks at each ear. 3 sets of 5 rectangular scars on either side of mouth. 3 bars between eyebrows. Eyes are painted white with black painted pupils. Open mouth with teeth painted white. Smooth raised beard and chin with spade shaped carving. Minor scratches on face. 6524 2008.4.12 Mask Baule Mblo Mask in guru style. Curving horns on top. Kneeling female figure grasping horns. Figure wearing 2 shells on braided fiber necklace. Beaded string wrapped 4 times around waist. Snake carved from forehead, extending down to chin of mask. Both horns and animal have deeply carved striations. Pigment remains on tips of horns and portions of carved animal. Mask is mostly flat under carved animal. Slitted eyes, small erect ears, rectangular combs on either side of mask. 6525 2008.4.8 Mask Small mask, possible fetish object for ancestral worship. The mask exhibits brass carved eyes, large protruding forehead,and a long carved nose. Smooth back, groves carved in sides of mask from top to cloth covering. Cloth covered lower portion of mask. The cloth is worn and discolored. There is a small gouge on forehead and top of mask. 6530 2009.2.0022 Mask Carved wood painted mask made to mimic the look of a bird with a crest on top, beak, and projection off bottom of the chin. Square eye holes with the nose protruding from in between the eyes. The mask is painted in a vertical striped pattern. 6531 2009.2.0024 Chair Dark brown back rest, sides and legs, lighter brown seat, alternating triangular carvings on the sides, legs and dark wood under the seat. 6532 2009.2.0025 Stool Short stool made of dark brown wood has four legs that are rather wide, decorative carvings on the seat of the stool. A crocodile is located in the center with birds on each corner and a turtle in between the birds. The stool seat is oval in shape. 6536 2009.2.0048 Carving Two carved human heads, one on top of the other. Bottom head has shoulders and prominent facial features. There is some sort of head covering with a large opening in it. On top of bottom head there is another head carved from the chin up. Behind head is a large opening. Various lines etched on piece, from straight lines to checkerboard designs. 6548 2009.2.19 Pipe Long pipe. A. wooden stem B. brass bowl. One end of stem is clear of decoration. The other end is wrapped in snake skin with 9 small brass rings of animal heads attached. The animal heads are reduced representations of animal masks owned by a family. The buffalo provides protective powers.

6554 2009.2.30 Sandal Pair of thong sandals a. & b. Highly decorative leather work using many colors in the noted style of the Tuareg. Base of sandal is dark brown with stitching around the inside of the sole. Upper sandal is sage green with dark brown leather insets. Toe divider has two small round metal pieces and a small red pompom. The sandals are attached together at the soles. Untanned hide is used for the rounded soles. Goat skin for tops. 6555 2009.2.31 Necklace Silver pendant with string of black plastic(?) discs threaded with red glass beads. 6 red beads at back of neck, 3 red beads at each side, and 3 red beads at each side of pendant. The pendant has cut-outs on the sides with a horizontal bar across the center attached to two smaller vertical bars on each side of a center square - a cross shape. There is a keyhole-like motif above the center square with a curved bar across the bottom with a center point. There are four metal peg protrusions attached to the four outside corners of the pendant. Facing into the cut-out portion (around the center square) there are 4 fingers with holes through the ends. At the very bottom of pendant there are two flat wedge pieces attached with rings on each side of the bottom center point. 6563 2009.2.39 Bag, camel Very decorative large storage bag for camel travel. Designs sewn or painted on. Back of bag is a dark yellow with painted blue-green line designs. 6564 2009.2.40 Club "L" shaped heavy metal club. One end has a blunt flat surface. A human head (male) decorates the angle end, and a iguana sits on the outside of the smaller shaft. Color: BK, BS
6565 2009.2.41 Knife Cylindrical wooden handle in two portions. Bottom of handle is shaped like a shot glass with the wide end at the bottom (with a silver metal bottom), top part of handle tapers at both ends with a band of brass attaching to a silver colored oblong shaped guard. Handle is black ebony wood with thin stripes of multiple color running horizontally. Blade is longer than handle and begins to curve about mid-blade. End of blade comes to a sharp curved point.
