Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

6811 2010.3.1 Knife, Machete Knife: Short wooden handle with LEYTE carved into the base. Blade is long, the spine has a slight curvature leading to a fine point. The cutting edge has a far more defined curvature starting with a slim point getting larger at the center and thin again towards the handle. The flat side is very warn with signs of use. The face side has a very prounounced cutting edge and shows signs of use. The blade has maintained some sharpness. Scabbard: Two pieces of wood bound together with rattan. One side has no design, the other side has basic design of carved lines running the length of the scabbard. Wooden addition on the design side with two holes probably to alow for attachemt to a belt. 6818 2010.4.0016 Toy, push Medium sized handmade bicycle with adult seated at the front clothed in jeans, a striped shirt and a hat, behind the adult seated sideways on the back cart of the bike is a small child-like figure who is holding a bundle in one hand and the other is holding on to the bike. Child is fashioned from denim and appears to have a "ponytail" of some sort, there is a long piece of metal connected to the bike and a small handle at the other end suggesting this object was once used as a toy.

6820 2010.4.0019 Toy, push Small hand crafted tricycle, wheels are fashioned from metal wire that is then covered by bits of rubber. There is twine used to secure joints of bike including around the handlebars, around and inside the tires, and the base of the seat. 6822 2010.4.0021 Figure, religious Small sculpted fertility figure, fashioned from a wood carving over which an animal hide was stretched, cut, and fastened. The figure is a basic cylindrical shape with breasts, a slender long neck, a head, and two large ears. The crown of the forehead is decorated with a series of cowrie shells fastened by thread sewn into the head of the figure that travel from the front of the head to the base of the neck in the back of the head. 2010.4.0021 (Figure, religious) image

6825 2010.4.1 Bowl Flat base pottery with 2 handles and a wide circular top opening, 6" in circumference. One ridge which comes out 1 inch. Between top and outermost edge is detail as well as handles, 1.5" tall. Detail consists of indented lines horizontally of 2", vertile lines of .5", and rows of indented dots. Total dots 11, 12, 16, 18, 12 sets.

6841 2010.4.23 Necklace Round flat disk with three hanging pieces. The disk is made of wire and beads colored white, red, blue, orange, and yellow. At one end of the disk are six small wire hooks to clasp the end together. At the opposite end of the disk is a beaded arch with black, white, blue and red beads. In the middle of the arch is an oblong green bead. At the bottom of the arch are three long beaded strings hanging down. The strings are colored orange, white, and blue and each have a single cowrie shell at the end. The string is peeking out in various locations and the exposed wire on the disk forms segments. 6842 2010.4.24 Earring Two triangular shaped earrings made from metal and beads. The triangle metal is similar to a spring; tightly coiled. At the top of the triangle is a small hook to connect the ends together. On the two legs are three beads; white, blue, white. Connected to the bottom of the triangle are dangles with different colored beads that end in silver triangles pointing down. 6852 2014-4-3 Mask A wooden, elongated, oval-shaped mask in black color. The mask has a pronounced forehead, round, cut-out-eyes that are hightlighted with metal rings. The nose is narrow and the mouth is open and protruding with metal teeth exposed on the proper left side. The mouth also has a strip of cloth across the top lip that matches the one that covers the eyes. A series of three cicatrix marks appear around the perimeter of the mask. A fiber beard is attached below the chin. Holes are pierced around the circumference. A strip of cloth appears across the face, just above the nose. 6853 2014-4-4 Mask An oval-shape wooden mask having well defined and deep-set eyebrows, slit eyes and small slit mouth. The mask is defined by dividing the left and right side with a very broad strip from the forehead to the nose. The proper right side of the mask is defined with white (kaolin) upper right and dark red on the lower surface. The proper left side is defined by dark red in the upper portion of the mask and white (kaolin) on the lower left. Classic Fang sculpture. 6854 2014-4-5 Mask A small round soft wood mask with strong facial features. The eyelids are large and pronounced exposing slit eyes, a narrow nose and small open mouth. The ears are extended outward and pierced. The face has traces of white kaolin and blue indigo coloration appears below the eyes. 6880 2015-3-10 Cup, Kuba (Bashilele) Wooden drinking cup in human form with exaggerated feet, small thin body and short arms held together in front of his body. The large head is square in shape with coffee-bean eyes, sweeping eyebrows, narrow nose, small partially open mouth and cicatrix markings on both temples. 6881 2015-3-11 Statue, Lagoon A large female figure seated on an Akan stool with legs apart, arms above her head supporting a barrel. Her breasts are suspended downward with several metal tacks inserted in the body. The eyes are coffee-bean in shape with an elongated nose and closed mouth. 6883 2016-17-7 Maul Full grooved maul with a larger band, but not a deep groove.  It's not as rounded off as other mauls but does have some chips and scraping at each end.  There is a large divot along the groove apporimately 4cm long.
6884 2016-17-9 Celt Polished squared flared celt with very little amount of chips or wear on the blade.  The head of the celt however has several pieces missing where the would have been squared off.  
6885 2016-17-10 Celt Rounded celt with a smaller and chipped blade.  The head of the celt has a larger chip in it that measures 2cm.  
6886 2016-17-12 Grooved Axe Full grooved axe, with the blade of the axe completely missing.  Also a piece of the head of the axe missing that measures 4cm in length.  The grooves are wide all the way around and close in depth all the way around. 
6887 2016-17-13 Celt Polished rectangular celt, ususally asscosiated with Hopewell.  The point of the celt is slightly smaller that the end of the celt.  Very smooth and rounded edges all around.  The head of the axe is slightly chipped from use.
6888 2016-17-14 Grooved Axe Extended poll axe that is rough and has a very deep groove that goes all the way around the axe.  There is a large chip along the blade and part of the face of the axe.  Where the axe has been chipped over time there is discoloration.  
6889 2016-17-15 Grooved Axe Full grooved axe.  The blade of the axe is offset from chips and extended use.  The back of the axe is chipped as well.  
6890 2016-17-16 Grooved Axe Semi-polished 3/4 grooved axe.  Small chips along the blade of the axe.  The blade of the axe is also offset and more worn on one side than the other.   
6891 2016-17-17 Grooved Axe 3/4 grooved axe, grainy and not polished.  Blade of the axe has been worn and is no longer at a fine sharpened finish.  
6892 2016-17-18 Grooved Axe 3/4 grooved axe, semi-polished.  The top of the axe has a piece missing aproximately 7.5cm long.  The back of the axe is just as badly chipped and worn.
6893 2016-17-19 Grooved Axe 3/4 groove axe, one side being smooth while the other has an indent covering a larger portion of the one side.  The blade of the axe has a large chip in it, approximately 3cm long.
6894 2016-17-20 Grooved Axe 3/4 grooved axe, extremely worn and semi-polished. The blade of the axe appears to be broken off and worn. Also has a label from the original collection that reads "L___ Ed Delong"
6895 2016-17-21 Grooved Axe Polished 3/4 grooved axe.  The head of the axe has completely fallen off, along the groove of the axe.  The blade of the axe is slightly chipped.
6896 2016-17-22 Grooved Axe 3/4 grooved axe, polished.  Axe blade is still to a point with several small chips.  One side of the groove is completley chiped off, measuring the entirety of the width, 7cm, while the other side is still in tact.  
6897 2016-17-23 Grooved Axe Polished 3/4 grooved axe.  Slightly chipped blade, and the head of the blade is chipped as well.
6898 2016-17-24 Grooved Axe Polished full groove axe.  No chips, althogh the axe head is worn from use.  The grooves are not completely rounded all the way around, the are very flat on both ends.  The grooves on each face of the axe are deep and the width is even throughout. 
6899 2016-17-25 Grooved Axe Large 3/4 grooved axe.  The blade has been flaked, uneven, and missing large pieces.  The head of the axe is missing a large piece measuring 5cm.  
6900 2016-17-26 Axe Broken axe head, with a clean cut where the groove of the axe would have been.  It is very smooth and the head of the axe is still fairly sharp.  There is flaking around the broken edge of the axe head.
