This increasing interest shown in the study of civil government is proof that the people are thinking and studying about governmental affairs as never before. Name "Miss Aletha Jacobs" written in ink.

209 1975.4.63.1 Book "The Modern Spelling Book" written by J. N. Hunt and H. I. Gourley. 160 pp. No illustrations. Tan hard cover book with blue lettering on the front and back cover. There is a scroll on the bottom of the front cover with a pen directly behind and extending to both its left and right sides. On the inside of the front cover is written "Aletha Jacobs, Independence, Iowa, Sept. 12, 1901." There are 210 spelling and pronunciation lessons in this edition.

Handwritten notebook with notes about her life as a teacher and clippings from papers concerning World War I. The last page lists governmental officers from the president down to Black Hawk County officers.

220 1975.4.76 Notebook Webster Theme Tablet used as a handwritten guidebook in a sewing class. 1915. Fabric pieces used for practicing stitches are pinned to several pages with sewing pins. A stamp on the back cover states the booklet was sold in Waterloo, IA. Likely used by Aletha Jacobs Hutchison while she taught in Black Hawk County, 1912-1916.
221 1975.4.77 Book 1902-1910 teacher's class record book for multiple schools in Buchanan and Benton counties. The teacher was Aletha Jacobs. The first page says "Aletha Jacobs, Brandon, Iowa, February 12, 1908." There are two loose papers amongst the pages: one is a list of students in Lime Creek school Dec 1906-Feb 1907; the other is a newspaper clipping with poems. The book is titled "The National Teachers Daily Attendance Record," published by National Publishing Company, Cedar Rapids, IA. Hardback, brown cover, green spine, red page edges, bound with four staples. The schools were: Brush College 7th district, Harrison township, Benton County (Apr.-June 1902), Prospect Hill school, 3rd district, Jefferson township, Buchanan County (Sept.1902-Feb. 1904), Empire school, Jefferson Township, Buchanan County (Apr. 1904-Oct 1905) (no records listed), Seward school, 6th district, Homer township, Buchanan County (Nov. 1905-March 1906), Prospect Hill (again) (Apr. 1906-Nov. 1906), Lime Creek school, Jefferson township, Buchanan County (Dec. 1906-June 1907), Prosect Hill (again) (Sept. 1907-Feb, 1908), Delaney school, Homer township, Buchanan County, (Apr.-July 1908), and the Seward school (again) (Aug. 1908-June 1910). Aletha Hutchison Jacobs, born in Buchannan County, Iowa, was a teacher for rural schools in Benton County (1900-1902), Buchanan County (1902-1910), Black Hawk County (1912-1916), Grundy County (1916-1920), Wright County (1920-1921), and Webster County (1922). In 1922 she moved to Pennsylvania with her husband, Elmer. There she taught at Hummelstown High School in Dauphin County (1922-1924) and Reamstown School in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County (1926-1960).

Issued by Office of County Superintendent. The pamphlet features several articles including "Maxims of George Washington", "Quotations from Addresses of Washington", "Lincoln on Washington", "Franklin's Famous Toast", "Washington", "The 22nd of February", "To a Picture of Washington", "Washington's Farewell Address", and "The Earliest Celebrations of Washington's Birthday." The front cover has a thin black border and a photo of George Washington. All text is in black.

For example, in this book there is a section on animals and Theodore Roosevelt is the author of one story entitled "Hunting the Grizzly Bear". In the section called Winter, Ralph Waldo Emerson has a piece entitled "The Snow Storm". Many other well-known authors are also represented in the book. The literary stories range frojm Sir Thomas Mallory's King Arthur Stories to Theodore Roosevelt. On front cover is a picture of an orange knight holding a joust and riding a horse. 264 1984.6.43 Portfolio Of Margaret Sarah Borah Gould. Appears to be a folder to hold paper and answered and unanswered letters. The object is in the style of an expandible folder. The inside has room for paper and also two folders that are white and open on the right side to allow letters to be placed inside. Both folders are white and have gold writing on the side. One folder reads "Letters Answered" and the other reads "Unanswered." In front of both folders are sheets of lavender paper. The paper is positioned between two matching white pieces of paper. The last purple page has pencil writing on it. The inside cover is also made into a folder that expands and is of the same white paper as the other folders. The outside is done in dark green and has a large oval in the center and scrolls at each corner. The spine is plain and the folder closes on the right side with a flap that folds over and fits into the metal fastener in the center of the cover. The metal fastener appears to be lockable. The back cover matches the front in design. Inside the "Unanswered" folder were various piece of paper. Items include "Sherwood's Writing Speller" that has the name "Maggie Borah" on the front cover and many words written down inside, a letter to Mrs. George B. Gould, a small greeting card, sheet music written in pencil and various school notes and handwriting lessons. There are many letters and greeting cards haphazardly in the folder.
