Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

5029 1996.11.1 Hat Complex, multiple parts. Large camel fur trim makes up rim of hat. Thin fabric membrane between rim & main cap. Main cap made of papier mache-like material. Three eyes are printed on front, one in a vertical position. Metal tube coming out of top center of cap with piece of cane and another metal tube inside it. Metal tube has small rectangular textile attached to front with piece of maroon cordage. Also attached to metal tube is a long textile train. Train is woven of metallic thread with floral motifs. Train has multi-colored fringe at bottom, backed in red. Small metal loops attached to sides of main cap. b. Ornament for top of hat. Metal sheet with skull & flames painted on front. In center of sheet a rectangular area has been removed. Round black textile ball protrudes through this space, with metal rod inserted through it holding it secure to metal sheet. Metal rod inserts into metal tube on cap (a) allowing ornament to sit on top of hat. There is orange cordage to attach to small wire loops on sides of cap (a). Color: BK,RD,OR,WH,ML

5032 1996.11.12 Shoe Three separate textile areas. Upper area is maroon cotton fringed in orange. Toward top of this an orange shape is securely sewn on. Strap is used to tie uppers to leg. Below maroon upper is a woven textile with metallic thread with floral motifs. Below this is a white canvas section which attaches to the rubber soles. Wide toe of shoe points upward. Inside sole covered with yellow & white removable pad. Top of rubber sole inside covered with blue cotton. Color: PR,WH,GD,OR,BL
5033 1996.11.13 Wrap, clothes Square orange cloth. On one corner a red square is attached with blue lettering. (Lettering is in a non-Western script). In one corner a 6 3/4" x 6 3/4" red wquare piece of cotton is attached. On this red square is blue lettering in a non-Western script. Beneath the red square an orange strip sewn from inside corner to outside corner and is sewn securely at the outside corner. The strap extends 54" beyond the outside corner and 13" beyond the inside corner of the red square. This strip is used to secure the bundle once full. Color: OR,RD

5039 1996.11.4 Robe Multiple paneled robe, with red lining. Exterior panels rich in metallic thread with strong floral motifs and other stylized geometric forms. Long billowing sleeves. At waist there is a red belt. At hips, panels protrude from sides & are pleated. This creates a shelf look at the hips. The protruding panels have a string passing through their outside corners and attached below armpits of robe. This holds up the shelf-like extension created by the pleated and protruding panels. 5040 1996.11.5 Apron Rectangular panel backed with red. Much gold and silver metallic thread used. Central large motif is a three-eyed dragon-like face. A perimeter design along sides & bottom contains a human face in each corner and a skull face centered between them separated by a sceptre-like geometric design. 5043 1996.11.8 Dagger Iron dagger taped with a four-faced head. One face has frown. The other three have open mouths showing teeth and tongue. Dagger tapers to a three-sided point. Intertwined geometric motif decorates each side of blade. Black scarf attached to hilt and dangles separately. Red scarf is tied to middle of black scarf joining another black scarf to it. 5044 1996.11.9 Necklace Beaded portions very symmetric in color & type of beads used. Center piece is circular breast plate. Beads attached to blue-gold metallic fabric with red back. Bead pattern is circular with round, white pearl-like beads making up outside circle and inner "bull's eye". From outside in, each ring of beads is the same color, blue, red, green, yellow, blue. Two short beaded yellow strips are attached at top of breastplate. Each ends in a red card to tie together around neck. Two long beaded yellow strips attach at bottom of breastplate. These are intertwined at about 2/3 their length and separate again. Red cord is attached to the end of these strips which allow them to attach like a belt around the waist. Color: YL,ML
5045 1996.18.1 Dress Navy blue velvet dress with gold embroidered designs on the end of the sleeves, bottom of the dress and around the neck line. Color: BL,GD,PR
5046 1996.19.1 Robe Deep blue pongee or crepe silk coat with kimono sleeves; no shoulder seam. Lined in light blue. Neck and hem and side slits trimmed with two types of embroidered trim. Trim nearest the edge is 1 5/8" wide and has black background shaded blue flowers and brown branches. Black satin binding on both edges of this trip. Other trim is a braid edging with multi-colored flowers separated by a key kind of motif. Scroll motif in blue below, and a scalloped edge. Other edge is straight. Sewn on by hand about 3/8" from wider band. Sleeve edges have strip of cream silk 3 3/4" wide embroidered in satin stitches, blue flowers and zig zag embroidery on edge next to strip of same border at neck and hem edges. Gold buttons are fastened by plain black silk eyelets. Garment laps left over right and buttons at right side seam. Two buttons at neckline, one in center and one to the right and about two inches lower. Left front neck edge tapers from there to side seam button at bottom of sleeve. Two buttons at side seam resemble a flower bud. Two at neck are flat with design of a lion rampant holding a crown. Back of these buttons reads "W. R. Smith. Treble Gilt". Color: BL,BK,WH
5047 1996.19.2 Robe Sheer cream robe, with kimono sleeves and center back seam; no shoulder seam. Closes center front with no lap; black silk cord eyelets. Sheer fabric has occasional 8" circular medallions woven in. Sleeve and side seams continuous and reinforced with strip of material sewn in and whipped to back of garment. Four kinds of braid used for neckline, center front and sleeves. Prominent is a sheer black strip 2 1/4" wide with flower and branch motifs in half-cross stitches in shades of blue. Used at hems and 27" up from center opening from hem, mitered at hem edge of center front and upper end. Near this strip, 3/8" apart, is a dark blue faille or grosgrain braid, 1" wide, with medium blue embroidery, narrow strips of rose buds on the edges and roses 1/2' wide down the center. Remainder of center front is trimmed with 1" wide puple braid with designs in cream and lavender woven in. Entire neck center opening and bottom edged with black silk binding 1/4" wide. At neckline black fabric with blue flowers is at neck edge, fasted at outer edge by bias strip stitched on flat. 3/8' away is the dark blue braid with blue flowers, as on the hem and lower center front. Sleeves end with double layer of plain cream colored fabric to which the end of the kimono sleeve is whipped down on the inside of the sleeve. Above this a multi-colored braid with narrow rows of blue, purple and cream stitched on pale green background. Above this is a row of the black net and blue flower trim, edged at the top by a black silk bias band. 3 buttons are open work brass balls. Color: CR,BK,PR
5048 1996.20.0001 Skirt Rectangular shaped with a straight cut remaining 44" wide from top to bottom. Denim blue predominant color with horizontal white stripes every 2 inches, in distinct 2-2-10 pattern. Half way down skirt is a horizontal woven strip that is multi-colored. This strip also occurs vertically down one side. This strip is 1/2" wide. Color: BL,WH
5049 1996.20.0007 Ladle Carved from a single piece of wood to form shape of a duck. The torso of the duck is carved out to form a cup. The tail is rounded out to form a pouring surface. The duck is flat on the bottom allowing the ladle to set weight on its own. The wood is natural in color and carving marks can be seen on it. The neck of the duck is out stretched with a 2-inch bill. There are no facial features or legs. Color: TN
5050 1996.20.0008 Sculpture A reptile-like creature with wings, two 1-inch ears, 4 legs and piraling tail. The center body (head, torso, tail) is yellow with turquoise print with red dots located in the middle of triangles. The two wings are black with yellow and red vertical stripes. The legs (4) are orange with black dots. On the bottom of the torso is a vertical red stripe with horizontal yellow stripes. All four legs have tree toes. Mouth is red. This object was created in one solid piece. Color: OR,YL,BK
5051 1996.20.10 Set, cordial One pitcher and eight serving glasses measuring 2" in diameter and height. a. The pitcher is glazed on the inside and outside. It has a 3'' cylindrical spout 1 3/4" in diameter, bulbous body with flat bottom. There are geometric designs circling the top half of body terminating at spout base and body midpoint (max. width) respectively. Designs consist of a 3-layered tier, top & bottom, made up of criss-cross patterns. Middle tier consists of geometric patterns on teal background. b. - i. The serving glasses have the same colors as pitcher, including a teal criss-crossing pattern on white background. Cups have hourglass shape and flat bottoms. 5052 1996.20.2 Blouse Has a 6' hole in center for head. Around this area and shoulder there is green triangled border approx. 1'' wide. Blouse fits over head with material distributed equally in back and front. There is no sewing on sides, connecting the front and back; therefore there are not distinct armholes. In the center of blouse there is embroidered geometrical figures which are patterned the same on the front and back, arranged horizontally.. The embroidered area is 30" followed by off-white material. Located in front is a 5'' zipper. Color: TN,PK,RD
5053 1996.20.3 Sash Belt has a 4" width except at ends where material is braided to form an area where it can be tied around the waist. The entire mid-section of belt has a quarter inch green border. Inside this border are various geometric and animal motif designs. Color: GR,BL,GD
5054 1996.20.4 Shawl The most predominant color is red. Running vertically through the cloth are stripes varying in color. None of these vertical stripes is wider than 3/4". The ends of cloth are unfinished with strings hanging out. Color: RD,ML
5055 1996.20.5 Bolt, cloth Material is made in a horizontal pattern with the predominant color of dark green. Within the green material are spots of black and white, also horizontal. Separating the green areas are 4 strips of varying colors together approx. 2" wide. This striped horizontal pattern runs throughout the textile. Color: GR,PR,BK,WH,ML
5056 1996.20.6 Shawl Cloth does not deviate from maximum width or length. Predominant color of cloth is black with specks of white running throughout. There are also thin orange lines running across cloth 1/4" from each other. The ends of material at 30" widths are knotted to form a distinct triangular pattern for 15" on both ends. 5057 1996.20.9 Pottery Round, with 12" diameter. The rim has a height of 2" and a diameter of 5". The pot is solid in color with a glaze overtone on top half. Also circling the shoulder of the pot is a row of rabbits along with vegetation. The rabbits are outlined in white and colored black. They are 3 1/2" in height and 5" in profile. 5064 1996.30.5 Hat Stocking cap with earflaps in various shades of brown, plus cream. Earflaps have bird motif in cream color. Main part of cap has Alpacas in cream, with dark brown stripe both above and below. Dark brown stripe has geometric motif resembling the letter "N". Top of cap and ear flaps have short knitted strings. Exterior edges finished with cream-colored chain stitch. These traditional hats are worn to keep the inhabitants of the Andes Mountains warm and Alpaca wool is a large resource. 1996.30.5 (Hat) image
5065 1996.30.6 Cap Knitted in dark brown with cream and gray pattern motifs. Ear flaps have two motifs like backward "N". This motif is repeated on two stripes on cap. Between those two stripes is a row of alpacas or alpacas facing right. Edges finished with chain stitch. Tassels on ear flaps. These traditional hats are worn to keep the inhabitants of the Andes Mountains warm and Alpaca wool is a large resource. This hat appears to have been washed in too hot of water which caused the wool to felt and the hat to shrink. There is hand stitching in what appears to be a repair on one of the ear flaps.
5066 1997.10.1 Painting Painted on cream-colored bark. Represents the Aztec rain god, Tlaloc. Pictured in full regalia with arms outstretched and knees bent in the middle of a stride. Appears to be offering the leaves in the left hand and the bird in the right hand to a figure, face only, shown up and to the right, as if in the sky. 5069 1997.10.4 Satchel Formed of strips of handwoven wool fabric, finished on edges, folded in half to form bag with fold at bottom. Side edges lashed together and opening at top. Bag has vertical stripes of various widths and natural shades of brown. Center stripe is 4.5cm wide, of 4 diamonds forming larger diamonds. Three knotted tassels on bottom fold. Heavy braided cord runs continually from one bottom corner 79cm where it has been made thicker and wider for 41cm, then an additional 79cm, the last portion lashed to the other side and ending at the other bottom corner.
5070 1997.10.5 Bag Five pieces of processed bark sewed together to form shopping bag. Two pieces are side panels, one the bottom panel, 33 3/4" wide, and two pieces the handles. Top edge and bottom panel have widely spaced blanket stitch of twisted twine, which secures the unbleached muslin lining to the bag. One side panel has two motifs painted on. Each is of 2 stylized animals facing each other. Animals are drawn in black, as are the mouths and eyes. Eyes and background are red. Red background outlined in wide black line. Other side panel plain cream. Color: CR,RD,BK
5071 1997.10.6 Hanging Printed panel. Human figure in center has checkerboard pattern on body and elaborate headdress that seems to represent feathers. Side panels represent a series of one kind of animal, possibly a lizard, with long tail arched over the back. Border is of rectangles surrounded by a zigzag line with dark brown on inside and gold on outside of orange zigzag. End of border suggests a crocodile's head. Various small animals and geometric motifs in open spaces of design throughout. On bottom, inside border, says "Rey de Moros" on left and "Sylania Prints Lima Peru" on right. Selvedge is stamped "Sanforizado - Mercerizado - Union". Top and bottom edges are torn, and unfinished. Color: CR,BR,OR,GD
5072 1997.18.0001 Cap Stocking cap with tassel at top. bottom six inches are double thickness, with inner layer cream colored and lighter weight. Outside layer flares at bottom. Background color is medium brown with bands of knitted designs. Knitted-in color alternates between cream and dark brown. Crocheted edging with a row or each color applied 5 1/2' from bottom. 5073 1997.18.2 Blouse Unbleached cotton gauze blouse with long loose raglan sleeves is gatherd to square neckline. 2" lace at neckline. Lace has bands of ribbon, 1/4" wide, machine stitched 3/4" apart. From neckline colors are green, purple, orange. Stitched across back and over shoulders, then released to hang loose at sides about 7" . Bottom of blouse and sleeves have same colors of ribbon, green at hem edge, machine stitched 2 1/4' - 2 1/2" apart. Side seams are both at selvedge of fabric. No maker's mark or label. 5074 1997.18.4 Mask White felt mask has been shaped and stiffened to form face, lined with pink material and attached to hood that fits over head.. Cut outs for eyes and mouth. Trimmed all over. Red felt used for outlining mouth, creating wide attached eyebrows and heart shaped cheek patches. Sequins applied all over. Fringed gold braid for eyelashes. Ears of white felt are stitched on at sides. Front of ears covered with brocade, outlined in yellow and gold tear drop shapes applied. Three shapes stitched at top of face give overall effect of a jester's hat. Right side of face has yellow, center fuchsia, and left side blue background. Each has a gold foil border and center shape, with silver sequins between the area of gold. Center shape is topped with a 1" gold sequin; sides have a small bell dangling from a sequence of 4 beads, alternating pink and yellow. Mask is lined in pink fabric, shaped to conform to mask. Mask is attached to a rectangular fabric cap, 13 1/2' tall x 11 3/4" wide. Front is light blue; back is fuchsia. Color: WH,ML
5075 1997.27.1A Pullover Sleeveless garment that is put on by placing over the head. Made of long narrow woven strips. Strips are machine stitched together along their long axis to form a large rectangular garment. The neckline & chest are tan & light brown machine embroidered to form a stylized & geometric form. Tan embroidery around vertical pocket slits on front are 1 1/4" wide. Woven strips repeat in a pattern of purple, cream, metallic gold, cream & purple. 1/2" x 1/4" holes woven into design of strips. The back of the garment has a tan embroidered spiral beginning at the neckline & ending in the center of the back. The spiral encloses an embroidered circle. Also on back just below center of neckline is a tan embroidered oval with two pointed ends.

5078 1997.27.2A Top Sleeveless garment worn by pulling on over the head. Garment is made of long, narrow woven strips of cotton 8 7/8" wide. These strips are machine stitched together along their long axes to form a large flared rectangular garment. Each piece of material has alternating stripes of purple & brown. Stripes measure 1" for purple and 1 1/2" for brown stripes. The neckline of the garment has green stitching going around it and down to the chest. The chest & stomach area have stitched green geometric designs, 11 in all. The center has two pockets with openings 5 1/2" x 1". The back has the same geometric designs, just below the neck, as is seen on the front. The armholes and bottom of the garment have different cotton of red and white stripes around the openings. The chest & stomach area have stitched green geometric designs, 11 in all. The center has two pockets with openings 5 1/2" x 1". The back has the same geometric designs, just below the neck, as is seen on the front. The armholes and bottom of the garment have different cotton of red and white stripes around the openings. The pockets & inside neck area are lined with blue cotton. b. Pants are of the same material & design as a. & c. Waist band is blue cotton and is 3 3/4" wide. Waist band is constructed with elastic. The front waist band has a triangle cut out where the elastic can be pulled to tighten the waist of the pants. c. Hat is made of same material as a. and b. & has same stripes. 5092 1997.4.14 Paddle Wooden canoe paddle. One end wide and pointed, decorated in circular pattern with 6 petals revealed by darkening areas between them. narrow line scored into wood 1" from edge. Handle portion of this end rounded and smooth.; Other end is narrower and rounded. A 12" x 1/2" channel has been cut through the wood. Each end is a circle 5/8" in diameter. A similar size circle has been left in the wood at the center of the opening. A narrow line is incised 5/8" from the edge. Handle portion at this end has squared edge. Marked by the collector in red "Procured at the Durka bush Negro village Santigran on the gold river village Saramaaca 1964. This is the same village where I procured the dugout canoe."
5093 1997.4.15 Paddle Wooden canoe paddle from Albina/Surinam. Narrow through center section; wide at each end. One end rounded and painted on both sides with a hiled-like pattern of green, red, blue, pink, and white. Other end widens also but is squared off at end. This end carved both sides at neck portion with what resembles an interlacing double chain. A line 1/4" wide and parallel to edge, is painted blue. Center of this area has a line of chip =-carved half-moons down its length. Marked in red by the collector, "Procured at Albina Surinam 1964." and in pencil, " L M tTok H EN Albina."

Rod has two rings of metal, a narrow one 1 1/8" from the open end, and a wider thicker one over the join between the tube section and strainer section. Strainer section shows seam between top and bottom portions. Arc-shaped piece applied over curve at end. Color: SL
5096 1997.4.17 Staff Staff of office from Pisac Peru. Long tapered cylinder of dark reddish heavy wood. Lower end has a sharp pointed piece extending beyond wood. 6 bands of metal, 1 5/8" wide encircle the stick, trimmed with 5-petaled flower motifs. Flowers on 5 are repousse technique; sixth is etched into the metal. Near the top there is a narrower band with etched pattern and a scalloped shield one-third of the circumference, with a repousse flower in each of the three scallops. A tapered flat metal knob is fitted at the top of the stick. It has two columns of the flowers, and a cross with four flowers surrounding it. A braided metal chain with a small cross wind around the staff in a double helix. Collection Date: 1930-1950
5097 1997.4.18 Slingshot Long braided cord at each end of crocheted medallion, 7" x 3 1/2", both made from a combination of dark and natural unscoured wool from unknown animal. Medallion has decorative pattern and a 2" slit for insertion of stone. Cord at one end divided into smaller cords for about 1/2" forming a loop 2 1/2" from end. Other end appears to have been originally half of the length of the other and has been extended to same length, using the same colors of fiber, but with a much simpler, cruder technique that creates a softer, looser cord. 5098 1997.4.20.0001 Blowgun Made from 2 half cylinders of wood, hollowed out to form bore for darts. Exterior appears to have been bound with a small cord wrapped in a spiral pattern to secure the wood sections, and then coated with a black mastic of some kind. Color: BK
5099 1997.4.20.2 Quiver Section of bamboo, filled in at one end with a white substance. Lashed at top and 2" from bottom with dark brown cord. Top one secures braided fiber cord that forms carrying strap. Bottom one lashes on a narrow strip of bamboo which sticks up parallel to surface of bamboo cylinder. On this strip is strung a hollow round gourd with a 3/4' hole inside away from bamboo cylinder. Cylinder filled with narrow atrips of plant material.
5100 1997.4.2A Drum Drum and stick. a. Drum appears to be made of hollow tree trunk. Secured at bottom and top with shaped branch and also rope, encircling it. At four places two ropes stretched from top to bottom, spread 4" at top and bottom and lashed together with leather thong in center for several inches. Crown of feathers wrapped around one end for 27 1/2". Top and bottom are parchment made from animal skin. Rope carrying handle. Hole, 3/8" diameter, drilled in each side. b. Drumstick.
