Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

5202 1998.19.31 Ladle Miniature. The handle widens before it connects with the ladle. Looking down into the ladle, the center is carved out, and there is a small hole in the center. Looking at the ladle from the side, the ladle curves downward and looks like a half-circle. Two dark brown lines are drawn into the bottom of the ladle, and another one at the base of the handle. 5203 1998.19.32 Mortar Miniature. The handle has a rounded tip and widens slightly when it attaches to the body. There is a small ridge, then the wood extends out a bit at an angle. The next two pieces are similar to the first extension, except the pieces are successively larger and the the angle of inversion is greater. The final, base piece, is round, with the top colored dark brown. In the middle are vertical cuts into the wood, with dark brown horizontal lines between the grooves. There is a thin dark brown line drawn around the bottom, and a small hole in the base. Color: TN,BR
5204 1998.19.33 Saltshaker Miniature. The base is round and the sides angle upward. Halfway up the sides come in contact with a circular piece of plastic, which forms the top half of the piece. Color: OR
5205 1998.19.34 Cloth, tapa There are two types of diamonds on the cloth. The first type begins with brown ink drawn on the shape of a diamond, then two inner blue lines also in the shape of a diamond, set against white. The center of the diamond has blue lines drawn in the shape of an "M". There are two of them and they reflect one another. The rest of the diamond-shaped center is blue, with a white rectangle on either side. A brown line is drawn through the diamond. The second type has similar brown and blue outer lines as the first. Inside these lines are blue lines arranged in a step pattern and resemble a diamond. Inside the step diamond are two brown triangles, facing one another, with a vertical blue line drawn between them. These two styles of diamonds are arranged in an alternating pattern, with the first style in one horizontal row, then below it is the second style in a horizontal row below it. Connecting the tips of the diamonds in each row is a solid brown diamond, and the sides of the diamonds are separated by solid blue circles, with the white cloth showing through on the sides of the circles. 5206 1998.19.35 Shirt A traditional Guatemalan shirt. There are thick vertical stripes of yellow surrounded on both sides with thin vertical stripes of orange, purple, green, and maroon. Next are thick vertical stripes of light blue surrounded on both sides with thin vertical stripes of red, dark purple, bright yellow, and dark blue. There is a breast pocket on both sides. On the rim of the pockets, collar and center buttons seen there is stitching. On the two outer edges the thread is light blue and stitched in a braid pattern. Inside the light blue thread on either side is light purple thread, stitched to resemble a circle. In the center is dark purple thread stitched to resemble a diamond, with an orange stitched center. The buttons are dark purple, sewn on with blue thread, and are inserted through a separate piece of cloth behind the center seam as not to show through a separate piece of cloth behind the center seam as not to show through on to the stitching. There is a button under the right collar, and a piece of cloth shaped like a loop on the left upper center seam to serve as a buttonhole. Color: PR,YL,BL,OR
5207 1998.19.36 Figurine Female figurine in traditional Guatemalan dress. The skirt is white near the top, red in the middle, and black ast the bottom with red diamonds in the center. The bottom rim of the skirt is a jagged cut. The shirt is yellow and long-sleeved. She is wearing a multi-colored cape lined in green, and is wearing a black hat. In her hands she is holding a spinning spindel and yarn. Her face hands and feet are pink. The figuine is mounted on a thin square of cardboard. Color: RD,BK,WH,YL,ML

5211 1998.19.6 Broom Miniature. Handle is made of light brown wood which comes to a point at the top. The bristles are of light brown plastic, attached to the handle by two thin strips of copper wire at 1/4" intervals. Color: BR,OR
5212 1998.19.7 Fan, rice Clay rice fan which was baked in a kiln and then painted. The inner rim and sides are rippled. The rim is painted green and the inside is painted red. The center of the rice fan has a pink flower painted in it, surrounded by flecks of green and yellow paint. Inside is covered with a clear glaze. Color: GR,RD,PK,YL

5215 1998.20.1 Pestle Poi pounder, like a pestle. Made of hard black volcanic rock. Base of pounder is round and edges curve upward for 4 1/2. The last inch is a handle to hold the pounder. There are two grooves in the handle to place your fingers on. Color: BK
5216 1998.20.10 Pitcher Water Pitcher with round base and neck, with a long mouth or spigot and a rippling "pie crust" rim around the mouth. Handle attached at top with two bolts. 5217 1998.20.11 Lamp, oil Green oil lamp. Round base with stem leading up to container where oil is located. Container has a flip lid that is found at one end, and comes to a triangle point over the spout. On the lid there is an image of a bird; a bird is also on the top of the handle. The spout is round on the sides and comes to a pint at the furthest end. Color: GR
5218 1998.20.12 Figurine, animal Bronze ibex; looks as if it is leaping. Might have once been in 2 parts; appears as if smelted together (line down the middle). Horns curved back from head toward back of neck. 2 eyes and ears. Color: GD
5219 1998.20.13 Axe Handle missing; stem where handle would have been inserted comes up at a slight angle. Handle end is broad and tapes to a point as it moves toward the blade. Blade straight but not sharp. Curves toward handle and makes the shape of a pot. Color: BR
5220 1998.20.14 Bowl, chopping Round wooden bowl with raised wooden center (diameter 2 3/4"). A small hole in the center of the raised part. Color: BR
5221 1998.20.15 Chopper, food Like an axe. Handle & head are gold colored. Carvings in handle to create design, also circles drawn down side of handle. Head is shaped like a triangle; at the base is where the blade is and an "arm" extends from the other 2 sides. 5222 1998.20.16 Point, projectile Short, thin stem which widens as it becomes part of the point;. The projectile point is curved on both sides, and where they meet becoming the point (not sharp). The sides extend downward, past the base, and create two points on either side before curving up and meeting at the stem. Color: BK
5223 1998.20.17 Pitcher Chibcha god depicted. Small hands and feet, painted orange. Large orange face is half of pitcher. Has big eyes which appear closed and lips; nose large with yellow gull's ring though it. Yellow ribbed collar around neck. Elaborate headdress with large half-circle earrings, points facing outward. Yellow lines drawn to create diamond shape. "Hat" is orange and curved like half circle, straight edge being the bottom. Lines carved crease squares and scallops across the front; has yellow flowers at top. Hat is trimmed along top with yellow border; lines cut into it, making it look like sun rays. 5224 1998.20.18 Bell Simple round bell. Ridge at bottom to create a "lip" at the base. Open hole at top (diameter 1 1/2") and over this the handle, also of iron. Clapper is bronze; has a long stem created when two pieces of bronze were twisted together. Clapper is round and hollow with lines and holes cut into place. Held in placed with a modern piece of copper wire. Color: BK
5225 1998.20.19 Pitcher, water In shape of a woman from waist to head. Waist on down is round: main part of pitcher. Has arms on waist, with grooves cut into hands to indicate fingers. Straight torso with offset breasts. Crude facial features - lines and gouges to indicate mouth, eyebrows and eyes; sharp pointed nose. Ears somewhat shaped. Hair in back, partially colored black. 5226 1998.20.2 Stove, charcoal Round gray metal base with lines drawin into surface to create designs. Slightly concave. Gold brass surrounds metal plate, with 8 sections extended to create feet and guard for metal plate. Each section has a 6-sided star cut into it, 3 holes in the guard extension, and 3 holes in the feet. 7 holes are cut below the star, and above the star; out of a single base rises two similar sides ( like a candleabra) with a base beneath the single base. 5227 1998.20.20 Spear Long spear, gradually tapers to tip. Has center ridge from top to center stern. Edges of spear are as long as the stem and form a tip, then curve upward to connect with the stem. Color: BK
5228 1998.20.21 Cage, animal Shaped like a house with sloped roof. Round hollow bamboo rods create support for sturcture, edges of roof, walls, and floor. Small bamboo sticks create actual cage by connecting large rods and enclosing the cage. The door is on the side, and is held in place with a bamboo stick. The "lock" is another bamboo stick that can be removed.
5229 1998.20.22 Tile Square piece of green tile. On back is piece of dark green felt. White paper patterns (appear to be flowers) have been pasted on. They were discarded patterns that were once on a mosque floor in Iran. Color: GR,WH
5230 1998.20.23 Lamp, oil Small oil lamp with thick round handle and long spout. Most of glaze gone on handle and only bits of glaze remain inside spout. Around container bowl are indentations in clay, probably were once designs. Again a small bit of glaze remains inside bowl, and some around rim, tip of bowl and a bit on the bottom. Color: GR,WH
5231 1998.20.24 Bell, animal Long hollow bamboo tube. 2 half-moon shapes on sticks are cut into the bottom; the top is concave. Two pieces of the tube extend upward for about 1/2" and have a hole in them through which the fiber rope is strung. The clappers are attached to the rope. Each clapper is in 2 parts - the upper part is connected to the rope and functions as a hinge, the lower part is the clapper itself and is attached to the hinge by a staple. The whole bell and rope is light brown; the clappers are dark brown. Color: BR,SL
5232 1998.20.25 Tile "Skeleton" of mosaic piece. Design is there, but "filler" pieces (the inserts of differently colored ceramic) have not yet been added. They are hollow. The borders around the spaces for filler pieces is painted blue; the rest of the tile is white ceramic. 4 "petals" on each side, with a rounded bottom and pointed top. Color: WH,BL
5233 1998.20.26 Tile Finished piece of tile; shape appears to be a flower. Borders are painted dark blue. Outer filler pieces are somewhat shaped like triangles and alternate colors of white and brown. Two of the inner filler pieces are half moons colored light blue with a green oval just above them, off center. 4 "petals" are on each side, with a curved bottom and pointed top - of the whole mosaic piece. 5234 1998.20.3 Figurine, animal Clay stag ( antelope). Hollow; where nose is supposed to be is the opening. Has tail, 4 legs, 2 eyes, and ears; male. 2 antlers, each with 6 points. Very smooth clay, colored rust red. Color: RD
5235 1998.20.4 Model, canoe, outrigger Outrigger canoe and paddle. a. Canoe and outrigger. Very smooth wood. Outrigger attached as on normal-sized canoe with twine. Outrigger extends 3 3/4" out from canoe and is 14 1/2" long. Canoe is carved out of solid piece of wood. b. Paddle. Brown, carved out of solid piece of wood. Lying in bottom of canoe; not attached. 5236 1998.20.5 Stirrup Very smooth. Toe end curves upward. At top of stirrup in front of foot opening is a cast of a fan-shaped icon. Each fan has 12 parts to it, with a cirle at each tip. The fan rests upon a circle within two other circles meant to be handle. The two fans are connectred by an iron bar. Two holes are in the base - air circulation or water drainage? Color: GD

5238 1998.20.7 Case, pen Three parts. a. Case. Long, curved at both ends like an oval. Bottom is red, sides are black with gold scrolling. Can't tell what pictures represent. Top is black with more gold scrolling on ends. Center has an arrangment of 3 flowers (possibly roses; 2 pink and red, middle one yellow and blue) surrounded by green leaves. Next to leaves on ends are pink swirls. Inside of box pulls out at one end. Inside is holder for pens and dried up inkwell under iron piece - chunks of ink still inside. Inside completely black. b. Broken pen. One end stained black with ink. Pen itself is wood and brown colored. c. Metal tip dipped in inkwell. Black, extremely rusty. Color: ML
5239 1998.20.8 Jar, cosmetics Case to store kohl (mascara) for the eyelashes. Bottom of the case is shaped like a tear drop, with the point at the bottom, curving to the left. At the top of the teardrop is a stem where the opening is. The upper pieces used to apply the kohl screws into this stem. The applicator is a long narrow piece of metal at one end, with the shape of a triangle at the other end. The triangle has lines carved into both sides for decoration and a hole at each of the points. The piece is made of some type of very shiny metal. Color: SL 1998.20.8 (Jar, cosmetics) image
5240 1998.20.9 Carving Four clay heads are glued on to a stained wood baseboard. The top clay head is the largest, almost rectangular in shape and is 1 1/2" long x 1 3/4" wide. The middle-right clay head is oval shaped and measures 1" long x 3/4" wide. The middle left clay head is oval shaped and measures 1 1/4" long x 1" wide. The hollow clay head is roughly triangular shaped and measures 1 3/8" long x 1 1/8" wide. Color: BR,GY
5241 1998.22.1 Shoe Hard brown leather sole with large white stitches. Brown leather comes up from the sole to form the sides of the shoe. The end near the toes forms a point and curls up. Gold stitching forms lines and circles on top of the shoe and surrounds the sides and heel. The interior is of red leather on the sides and green and brown leather in the center, with large white stitches connecting the twol. A design with 3 points and a circle at the bottom is in the center of the shoe and is of treen thread. The center is red thread. Color: BR,ML
5242 1998.22.2 Hat, Toque Dome-shaped. Top half is brown leather with gold stitching to create circles, lines, criss-cross, and tear-drop shapes. There is red stitching sewn to create an image of 3 leaves together with tips touching; there are 4 groups of 3 leaves on each half; 8 groups total. The bottom of the hat is green felt. Inside the hat is a strip of purple/blue cloth; above it is a piece of white cloth with green circles and squares, gathered in the center and held with a button. Color: BR,ML

5244 1998.22.4 Comb Wood, with wider prongs on one side and thinner prongs on the other. Both ends of the comb are concave in design. 4 small lines are carved from one end of the comb to the other - 2 of the lines run parallel with the wide prongs, the other 2 lines run parallel with the thinner prongs. 5245 1998.28.0004 Print, photographic Black and white; mounted on a thin piece of cream-colored cardboard. The photo shows a group of women and four men near the badk. All of the women have light-colored shawls over their hair. Some are carrying long wooden rods haped like shepherds' crooks. Two women are carrying large baskets on their heads. A name appears to be written on the bottom of the pasteboard, just under the lower left-hand corner of the photo. Following the name are the letters A. ARAN ( the last letter may be a Z), then A. R. 5246 1998.28.1 Comb Double ended comb. Wide end has ten tines followed by area of carved geometric designs narrowing into hollowed area with wings, terminating in a narrow nine-tined comb. Linear patterns are carved into narrow end. Color: BR
5247 1998.28.10 Comb Double-sided wooden African hair comb. The large comb has 8 teeth. At the top of the teeth is a double line zig zag pattern etched into the wood. At the middle of the comb's handle the outer edges separate. The center of the handle is hollowed out except for a small piece which holds the two combs together. On both sides of the center strip of wood is a small upraised piece. At the base of the teeth of the small comb the same double line zig zag pattern is repeated. The small comb also has 8 teeth. 5248 1998.28.11 Comb Double-sided wooden African hair comb. The large comb has 10 teeth. Above the teeth the wood is smooth except for a line etched in the shape of a triangle, extending from the top of the teeth almost to the bottom of the handle. Inside this triangle etching there is a random zig zag pattern. The handle is a human face with well-defined eyes, nose, mouth, and hair. The trinagle etching and zig zag pattern repeats on the small comb. The small comb has 10 teeth of varying lengths. Color: BR
5249 1998.28.12 Comb Wooden African hair comb with 10 teeth. Just above the teeth a zig zag pattern is etched into the wood, and this is repeated just below the handle. The handle is a carved figure of a woman kneeling. The woman is wearing a dress and has her hands on her thighs, and has a pot on her head. Features such as her nose, lips, and breasts seem exaggerated. Color: BR
5250 1998.28.13 Comb Wooden African hair comb with 10 teeth. Just above the teeth is a rectangular line is etched into the wood, with a zig zag pattern jnside the lines. The handle of the comb is in the form of an elephant, whose feet are on top of the rectangular pattern. Lines are drawn on the sides of the elphant to denote ears. Well-defined eyes and trunk, with notches to show flexibility. Color: BR
5251 1998.28.14 Comb Wooden African hair comb with 11 teeth. Above the teeth and below the handle the wood is smooth except for the center. In the center two triangles are etched into the wood, one of which is upside down. Inside these lines a zig zag pattern is drawn. The handle of the comb is a circular piece of wood with a small hole in the center. Three triangles of the same etched zig zag design surround this center hole with their tips touching the center hole. One triangle is at the top and inverted, the other two are on the right and left of the center hole. Color: BR
5252 1998.28.15 Comb Wooden African hair comb with 8 teeth. Three straight lines are etched from one side of the comb to the other. The handle is in the form of an inverted triangle with a walking elephant on top of the inverted triangle. At the tip and base of the inverted triangle 3 lines are etched from one side to the other. The elephant has well defined legs (which are "walking'), trunk, and tail. The eyes are white with a black center - possibly a hollowed-out bead. Color: BR
5253 1998.28.2 Basket The lid to a basket. One continuous coil of reeds. Strips of the reeds are wrapped around reed sticks. Small square colored pieces of reed are attached to the sticks by the reed strips as decoration. The ends of these colored pieces of reed overlap the next one. 5254 1998.28.3 Print, photographic Black and white; mounted on a thin piece of cream-colored cardboard. The photo shows 5 women standing on a grassy plain, in various styles of traditional African dress. 3 of the women are carying rectangular baskets on their head. 5255 1998.28.5 Basket Gathering basket made of reed strips wrapped around reed sticks. The basket is one continuous core of these reeds. About 8 coils up from the bottom the reed coil is covered by strips of dark pink cloth. 8 more coils up the reed coil is covered with strips of blue cloth and 7 strips up from that the reed coil is again covered by strips of dark pink cloth. The lid is a separate pied of reed coils but is attached to the basket by a thick piece of black cloth, which is woven through the lid and down one side of the basket. The handle is of reed sticks with black cloth wrapped around it. The handle is attached to the basket by thin strips of red cloth, and pink cloth where the red was gone. 1998.28.5 (Basket) image
5256 1998.28.6 Comb Double-sided wooden African hair comb. The large comb has 9 teeth, with the tip of one at the end broken off. Above the teeth is a double-line zigzag pattern, repeated 1 1/2" up. The handle is in the shape of an antelope's head, with one eye, ear, and horn on each side of the smaller comb, just above the head. The smaller comb has 8 teeth of varying lengths with the double line zig zag patern just below the teeth. The sides of the smaller comb curve out, then curve in to connect with the head. 5257 1998.28.7 Comb Double-sided wooden African hair comb. The large comb has 10 teeth, with the tip of one at the end broken off. At the top of the teeth there is one small line of alternating (top and bottom) triangles, one large line of X's, two lines of alternating triangles, one line of X's, two lines of alternating triangles, and one line of X's. The handle gently curves inward and forms the outside teeth of the small comb. The center is a hollowed out oval, with a niche in the wood on the outside of the handle by the top of the oval. There are four small teeth on each side of the small comb with one long one in the middle. Diagonal lines are etched into the wood between the top of the oval and the teeth of the small comb. 5258 1998.28.8 Comb Double-sided wooden African hair comb. The large comb has 7 teeth. There is no actual handle to the comb. The top of the large comb turns sharply in, and then just as sharply turns out to form the small comb. On the base of each comb lines are etched into the wood to create a triangle shape. The samll comb has 10 teeth, and one of the tips of the end tooth is broken off. Color: BR
5259 1998.28.9 Comb Double-sided wooden African hair comb. The large comb has 11 teeth. At the top of the large comb there is a line etched in a zig zag pattern, followed by a small ridge, followed by another zig zag pattern. The handle of the comb is carved to resemble a human face. The cheekbones are hollowed out, with the nose in the middle and the teeth below the nose, and the eyes above the nose. At the center of the face the outer sides of the comb curve and create a 1/2 circle. Above the eyes the alternating pattern of zig zag, ridge, and zig zag is repeted. The small comb has 14 teeth. 5260 1998.30.1 Cloth, fragment A triangular fragment of cloth from a Peruvian mummy. Outer edge has medium dark and light brown stripes. Along the edge of the last stripe is a symbol which looks like a "6", and next to this are three rows of squares. The two outer rows are light brown, the center row is dark brown. The design of the squares is similar but the "6" symbol is in the center of the light brown squares. The pattern then repeats. Color: BR,TN 1998.30.1 (Cloth, fragment) image
5261 1999.1.1 Mask Carnival face mask. Has elongated snout which turns upward at the tip. Face features include cut-outs for the eyes and mouth on both sides of the face and snout respectively. These cut-outs are highlighted in sky blue. Attached on the forehead is a diamond shaped piece of cloth with green background and metallic fringes displaying a gingerbread man and pieces of candy. Each eye has a prounced ridge above and below it. Two large horns emerge from the temples of the face. Each horn is covered with hundreds of conical points. Each horn is tipped with a small metal decoration. The base coat of the mask is red, all other colors are splatter painted on it. Behind the left eye in sky-blue the initials "RD" are written. The inside is primarily brown paper with some areas having paint spatter. Inside written in blue marker "Man/Careta '99" and "2/1/99". Wire for hanging attached at top center of mask. 5262 1999.18.0008 Spear, fish The wooden pole is divided into three pieces, two of which are attached (a) and one which is separate (b). Wound around one end of (a) is a brown string from which are 4 sharp metal prongs, each 11 3/4" in length. Color: BR,GY

5266 1999.18.1 Comb The comb has 10 teeth. The top of the handle is elliptical in shape. Two curved oblong holes are carved into the comb. Rows of triangles, circles, lines and "S" curves are etched into the handle. Dark brown discoloration on the back of the base. On the front of the base some of the area inside the etchings is white. 5267 1999.18.12 Paddle, miniature Resembles a paddle. On the front broad side there are two figures carved: a rectangular shape with a row of 4 notches above a row of 5 notches; a carved line separates the rows. The other figure is that of a human-like face. The eyes are very large and prominent and the teeth are bared. Color: BR
5268 1999.18.13 Staff The staff has 12 leaf-like carvings - 8 painted brown and 4 red and blue. There is a red painted band, and atop this a carved bird. The bird is painted yellow, red and blue. The area below the leaf carvings is squared. Below the squared area the staff is rounded and colored darker brown.

Above this - at about halfway up the page - is a connected line of 17 figures. These figures resemble 2 isoceles triangles connected with the connecting band an hourglass figure. The 7th and 14th figures from the left are crossed, and not solid like the others. 5289 1999.5.1 Chadri Chadri is a woman's robe that fits on to head & meant to completely cover the wearer. It is finely pleated except for the shorter front panel. The part which rests over the head resembles a cap and is thicker material. Immediately below the cap on the front panel is a band of embroidery, done in gold thread, curving around an oblong hexagon (length 5 1/4", width 2 1/4"). This hexagon exhibits drawn-work embroidery which enables the wearer to see through. Below the hexagon there are six embroidered "branches" with 5 "leaves" on each. At the bottom edge of the front panel is a 6" wide band of embroidery with scalloped edges - depicting flowers and leaves. On the front panel, around the hexagon, the stitching which attaches a 10 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangular lining to the inside is visible. Color: GD
