Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

Crown of feathers wrapped around one end for 27 1/2". Top and bottom are parchment made from animal skin. Rope carrying handle. Hole, 3/8" diameter, drilled in each side. b. Drumstick. 5102 1997.4.21 Club Long narrow heavy wood club from Venezuela. Lower half is basically flat on one side and curved on the other. Tapers about the center to a rounded form all around, and a very plain knob at the end. In the middle of rounded handle, a line has been carved out.
5103 1997.4.22 Headdress Crown of feathers attached to loosely woven headband of plant material. Most feathers are neutral tones, with one vivid green one near the right ear. A strip 6 1/2" long across the back, is 2 1/2" wide. Remainder is 6' high over the ears, tapering to 10" at center front. Center front is ornamented with whole bird, beak down. Felt eyes. 5104 1997.4.28.1 Helmet Brimmed cowhide helmet, fur side outside, with felt lining and cotton braid trim. Crown formed of four basically triangular sections lashed together. Brim also in four sections, lashed to crown and to each other, wider at sides over ears than at front and back. Applied cowhide trim strips. Plain ones at sides. Notched one over crown, with 4 small yarn tassels at ends. Woven and braided multi-colored cotton strip over seam between brim and crown. One piece thick felt liner in crown, shrunk and shaped to fit shape of crown.Metal staples at fron and back jut out of brim. Color: BR,TN,ML
5105 1997.4.28.2 Glove, boxing Made of three layers, fitted over the hand. Inner layer is simple woven fabric. Center layer is twisted shaped rawhide. Outer layer is stockinette-knitted wool. Used by reaching in hole at top and grasping twisted rawhide strip on inside at bottom. Heavy. Gloves usually contained a small stone and not much padding. Part of a ritual violence among 10 male members of the community.

5108 1997.4.30.1 Mortar Fashioned from tree trunk shaped to produce modified hourglass shape. Bowl at top has walls 3/4'' thick.

5114 1997.4.32 Necklace Twisted cord, knotted in center, between decorative pendant of disk and seeds at each end. Pendants composed, top to bottom, of two beads,disk cut from gourd, then four lines dangling. Disk is trimmed with a design suggesting a stylized sunflower. Lines dangling are a sequence of gray seed, brown seed, plant stem, brown seed, gray seed, portion of brown pod. Color: BK,TN,GY

5146 1997.4.44 Cloth, tapa Decorated with patterns of black or brown geometric motifs in concentric borders. Center area 4 1/2' by 18" long, decorated with a whirligig pattern at each end and a row of striped patterns in the center. Color: CR,BK,BR
5147 1997.4.5 Raft, model Long narrow raft of 9 bamboo stems with bench sort of construction on top. Base pieces connected with bamboo strip threaded through with another lashed with copper wire, with another nailed on and also with copper wire. Two poles of similar girth as base are at sides on 2/3 of length. Bench arrangement of shorter segments sits on these poles. Color: TN
5148 1997.4.6 Mask Green devil, carved from curved piece of wood about 1/2" thick. Prominent hooked nose and chin. Red-painted mouth has 10 animal teeth inserted. Prominent eyebrows and cheek bones. Below carved eyebrows are eye slits carved out of the wood. Below the slits are red-painted eyes with paper pasted on. The paper has ink eyeballs. Under-surface of eyelids is painted red. Some sort of bovine horns are attached at the side. Marked on the back "8 marzo 1954. Panacho Michoacan ISP." and "No. 53." This is a Diablo mask from a Pastorelas Play, which is a retelling of the Christmas nativity scene. 1997.4.6 (Mask) image
5149 1997.4.7 Mask This is a carved wood mask from Mexico. The wood is very light colored and there is no paint or extra additions to the mask. The mask has two bulging eyes and thin slits above for the mask wearer to see out of the mask. The nose is wide and has six indentations present, and no nostrils are carved. There appears to be an open mouth on this mask. There is a top lip that thins and curves outward. Inside of the mouth are two carved snakes that are descending from the top of the mask near its forehead. The snakes have carved eyes, mouths, and pattern features. The mask has two ears of an animal on the top, and between that is carved spikey hair. There are carved teeth in the mouth and two large sharp teeth are present at the bottom middle of the mouth. Along the outside of the mask are more carved indentations. Two holes are carved into the sides. On the back of the mask is the following, written in pen: "Patzuaro Michoacan 15 peso- 6 narco 1954 copalillo Madora Above is not correct" 1997.4.7 (Mask) image
5150 1997.4.8 Mask Pig's face mask carved from lightweight smooth grained wood. Mouth and eyes are carved open. Carving detail outlines ears, eyes, and tongue. Several teeth carved. Marked on the inside of the mask is: "Morelia -Macrh Mascara de Cerdo Madera "Pasqual" Francisco Ponce cost only 50 US cost 6 peso about 50 US" written in pencil and green pen. 5155 1997.5.14 Container, mascara In shape of cone, tapering to a cylinder 1/2" long, at top. Widest part of cone, the bottom, has solid bottom ap;lied. Lid is 7/8" long tube with circular top of another piece ot tin. Lid is longer than cylindrical portion of container on to which it fits. Cone has 9 vertical rows of tiny dots formed by pounding on inside of metal before forming the container. Filled with powdered hematite. Color: GY
5156 1997.5.15 Plaque Rectangle with unevenly rounded corners. Design formed by striking, is of a floral branch. Narrow border. In lower left says "Eniang 31/1/97"; formed by same technique as design. Color: GD
5157 1997.5.17 Instrument, musical Four-strand braided raffia, 18" long has 15 pairs of seed pods threaded through it on twisted raffia. Seed pods have been cut so each is open at the bottom. Outsides of pods are very smooth; insides are rough. Top of each pod has been sliced off, creating a circle about 5/8" across. In the center of those circles is a hole to allow the twisted raffia to be inserted and tied. A narrower braided strip is at each end of the wider one. Color: BR,TN
5158 1997.5.18A Suit Man's unlined, unfitted lightweight suit of gray tweed. Collar, narrow lapels and left edge are stiffened with non-woven fabric interfacing. No shoulder pads. Two chest pockets are patch styled with bottom corners rounded. Gold fabric is used at top and on a wedge at center edge, with a strip of suit fabric sewn on top of the gold. One-inch turned up hem.
5159 1997.5.18B Suit Pants Slacks have single pleat each side, and slash pockets at side seams. Rear pocket on right has button tab. Belt loops. Inside facing is stamped "Executive Super Design". Legs have 2' hem. All hems and seams through are machine overcast.
5160 1997.5.19 Bag, shopping Woven plaid bag bound with white binding. white zipper across center top, full length of top panel. 2 handles 7/8" wide are formed by one continuous strip of the same plaid, stitched at both edges down the side of the bag, across the bottom, up the side to form a handle, down the side, across the bottom, etc. Two manufacturer's paper labels stitched at top of one side between handles. One says "Parrot Brand Made in China" plus Chinese writing. The other reads 'JALOK MADE IN CHINA" and has two logos, one of thee arrows forming a triangle, marked PP, with 05 inside. Narrow turned up hem at bottom, sleeve edges and neckline. Chain stitich machine embroidery in white and yellow forms yoke 8 - 10" wide. Fabric in this area underlined with nonwoven interfacing. b. Headwrap. Same fabric, with narrow machine-stitched hem at ends, selvedge on both sides, and center seam the entire length. 5163 1997.5.21 Briefcase Traditional shape briefcase with top zipper and two compartments on inside. Outside is plastic-sheathed fabric panels that appear to have been batik-dyed. Accordion panel at top and ends is black plastic. Zipper is longer than side panels, to allow greater opening width. Fabric used is black with panels overlay design of green diagonal stripes in turn overlaid with white diagonal stripes, panels narrower and in reverse direction from green. 5170 1998.1.1 Mask Long blue bull mask with 2 horns. Face is painted like a globe. There are yellow continent shapes around the eye holes and down and under the mouth, There are also black lines drawn to represent latitude and longitude lines. The mouth is stylized and resembles a duck's beak more than a bull's snout. The eyes are teardrop shape. "96" is impressed into the forehead outlined in black. On the left horn are painted three children. The first is peach colored & has yellow shorts. The middle has a white body & black shorts. The bottom child is black with red shorts. The children start at the base of the horn and go up 11 1/2". The right horn has three white birds that also take up 11 1/2" of the horn. The horns each measure 22 1/2" long. The overall color of the mask is light blue with white mixed in to make the color look like water and sky. The inside of the mask is brown and left unpainted except for the puddle of white paint around th eye. The beak is rather dusty and dirty looking. 5171 1998.10.1 Serape Red and white stripes. Plain garment that has slit cut in center for head to fit through. Along rhe sides of the garment is a red stripe 1/4" wide that has purple wool sewn it it. At the bottom of the garment are red and white fringe 3 7/8" long hanging down. Color: PK,RD
5172 1998.10.2 Poncho A white Shirt with Red, Orange, Blue, Purple, and Green geometric designs around the collar, with a blue satin collar.
5173 1998.10.3 Hat Made of straw sewn together in a circular pattern. The brim of the hat is very wide. The top of the hat has interweaving pieces of black and white color straw sewn together to form a circle. The circle measures 2 1/2" in diameter. Hanging from either side of the top of the hat are purple and pink ribbons that are 26 1/2" long. There is a piece of pink yarn tied on one bundle of ribbon. The untied ribbon also has a leather strap hanging down next to it measuring 22" long. The inside of the hat has black stripes and a leather strap sewn inside the top of the hat. 5174 1998.10.4 Maraca Maraca is round and tan, made from a single large seed. Attached bottom is a wooden handle. The handle has three lines etched around the top and the bottom of it. The maraca has a painted scene of a green plant that has a person sitting in front of it. The person has a red shirt, white pants & brown hat. The person is bent over , head on the knees. In front of the person is a small green and blue picture. Written in black is "Mexico". Color: TN,AQ,RD,WH
5175 1998.16.1 Shirt Man's outer garment. Box shaped with small sleeves and a v-neck. Yellow, red, and green embroidery edge the neck, sleeves, and waist, with a green and red zig-zag pattern inside yellow lines and an inverted flower with 5 petals and 2 pistils at the base of the neck. The garment is made of rough dark brown wool. Color: BR,YL, RD,GR
5176 1998.19.1 Basket Miniature. The base, handle, and side supports are light brown plastic. The material which makes up the sides of the basket is also plastic and is colored deep pink. These plastic strips are woven through the side supports, which begin at the base, rise up, then circle down again to form a loop. Color: PK
5177 1998.19.10 Fan, rice Has been fired in a kiln. The rim and sides are rippled. The rim is painted green and the rest of the fan is painted red. In the center is a pink flower surrounded by green and yellow flecks. The inside is coverd with a clear glaze. Color: GR,RD,PK,YL
5178 1998.19.11 Fan, rice Has been fired in a kiln then painted. The rim and sides are rippled. The rim is painted green and the rest of the rice fan is red. In the center are 5 light yellow flowers, with either 5 or 6 petals per flower. Green paint flecks form a circle and travel through the center of the flowers. 5179 1998.19.12 Dustpan Miniature. Bottom is rectangular shaped, with the front edge slightly wider than the back. Near the front the edges are cut, so they angle inward. The handle is a single looped piece of tin which is attached to the dustpan by tucking the end of it under a piece of tin that had been folded into the bottom of the dustpan. Color: SL
5180 1998.19.13 Pitcher Miniature. A round base which extends upward and curves outward. A similar curved piece is then attached to the bottom piece. The two are welded together. There is a small hole in the top piece and to this an oval spigot is attached. This spigot extends upward and outward, with the mouth being slightly larger. A small handle is welded onto the back. 5181 1998.19.14 Pail Miniature. There is a small upraised base, then welded onto that is the actual pail. The sides extend slightly outward. Two holes were punched into the sides of the pail opposite one another, and through this a piece of wire was inserted to create a handle. Color: SL
5182 1998.19.15 Coffee Pot Miniature. A round base is welded to the actual coffee pot. The sides of the pot extend upward and slant in. There is a small round lid with a handle that came with the coffeepot. This lid comes off. The spigot, slim and cylinder-shaped, begins near the base and extends up and away from the coffee pot at an angle. There is a handle on the back. Color: SL
5183 1998.19.16 Candlestand Miniature. The base is round with an upraised center. In the center of the upraised base is a slim, cylindrical cone where a candle is to be inserted. A curved piece of tin is welded to the base, and ir rises upward 1". This is to reflect the candle's glow. A handle is attached to the backing. Color: SL
5184 1998.19.17 Ladle Miniature. A piece of concave copper is shaped like a bowl to create the actual scoop. The handle is a separate piece of copper attached by a small nail. The handle extends up and out at about a 45 degree angle, and curves under at the end. Color: OR
