The top layer has a red colored pencil border, an illustration of a flower with green leaves on each half, and says "To My Valentine." Inside is a poem written in pencil that says, "Daisy, Deary seal at my fate make those petals stay at eight. From, Arthur Hemming." The back faintly says, "Miss Pauline." Miss Pauline Heckel, born in Waterloo, Iowa, was a teacher for rural schools in Bremer County and attended Iowa State Normal School in Cedar Falls. 191 1993.24.225 Card Handmade valentine from a square of paper. Each corner has been folded to the center and then folded back to the folded edge just made. Center section created by the last fold has printed group of pansies attached. Edge of paper outlined on top in purple. Each corner has a small red crayoned heart glued across cut edges of paper. One word is written in pencil on each triangle folded back from the center. Read clockwise the words are "To My Dear Valentine". Back reads "Miss Pauline Heckel". A red thread hanging loop is attached to one side. Miss Pauline Heckel, born in Waterloo, Iowa, was a teacher for rural schools in Bremer County and attended Iowa State Normal School in Cedar Falls. She later married Harry Barck, secretary for the District Board of Education for Eddy #6 school, Cedar Falls Township, Black Hawk County. 192 1993.24.226 Card Valentine's card handmade with two pieces of brown construction paper tied together on the left-hand side with red thread. The edges are trimmed into a pattern. The cover says "My Valentine, To my little sweetheart," and has a cut-out illustration of a blonde girl drawn in crayon on lined notebook paper holding a cut-out red heart. Inside, the right page says, "To the teacher." The left page reads, "To my darling, darling, that's the word I love. All new fashioned words above, Of love that's fervent it doth tell. Let such love between us dwell, Darling, that's the word I love." This was among a series of cards from the Barck family. A small blue thread loop is tied through a hole in the bottom point. This was among a series of cards from the Barck family. The front has an illustration of two bells and holly in front of a red background beside the words "Merry Christmas" and the following poem: "While resound Merry Chimes, Bringing thoughts of Peace Goodwill, Be your Christmas many times Brighter than all Seasons still." The message on the back simply says, "Merry Xmas". It's addressed to Frances Barck from Bernice Nelson and is not postmarked.
