Ornate pieces of fabric hang off the yoke giving it a design. Arm length 21"; wrist to wrist 57"; shoulder to shoulder 15"; chest 31"; neck 12". A cheesecloth was attached to the bodice to lengthen the back. Color: BK
1607 | 1970.36.23 | Cape | Woman's. Decorated with bead work and sequins. Has ruffles around the collar, yoke and hem. Color: BK
1608 | 1970.36.24 | Dress | The silhouette of this Edwardian gown has a fairly thin shape and modest s-curve with no bustle. The lining and lace are made of silk and the overlaying fabric is made of cotton. The collar is two inces in height and made of striped lace, which extends onto the upper chest area. The collar has a piece of boning on the closure and also some metal makeshift boning on the front two seams. All closures on the garment are hook and eye closures wherein the eye is a loop of stitching rather than metal. Sleeves are constructed of three upper layers and are tighter fitting from the elbow to wrist. The entire sleeve length is approximately twenty-four inches from shoulder to wrist. The first two layers are approximately two inches each and the third layer is four inches in length. The mid-piece between the elbow and wrist measures four inches long and is made of silk identical to the underskirt. The wrists are completed with about two inches of lace that matches the lace found on the collar. The bodice measures fourteern inches from shoulder to waistline and has a fabric sash that drapes from the right shoulder, fans across the lower bodice, and then drapes back up to the left shoulder where a fabric buckle completes the look. The sash on front is fanned out and buttoned to the waisltine with a fabric button on each side. The center of the sash is gathered and covered with a fabric brooch with beading just under the bust. A floral pattern of sequins and beading adorn the left of the front sash and also along the line that joins the lace of the collar to the bodice. This beading is found in moderation on the upper back left shoulder as well. The same beading is found around the base of the third layer on both sleeves. The skirt drapes down from a twenty-six inch slightly empire waist and is made of five pieces with a very prominent seam down the front center. Accenting the base of the front seam are ten fabric buttons, five on each side, parallel to one another. The skirt is fairly slim through the hips and falls in a bell shape onto the floor. The skirt length in the front is forty inches while the back forms a light train with a total length of forty-eight inches. The skirt circumference is approximately ninety inches. At about knee-level, there are two pleats in the front on both sides. The pleating on the left is accented with a plain fabric brooch. On the back of the gown, the sash-cinched waist has a unique bow-like closure. Also, extended from the left side of the waist is a sash that drapes around the left hip and fastens with another bow-like decoration on the front right of the gown slightly below the knee. This sash serves to hoist up the front right of the skirt to reveal the bottom four inches of ruffled silk lining underneath. This silk lining peeps out from under the gown about one to two inches all around the base of the skirt and molre so where the sash lifts the skirt up. The interior construction of the garment has some interesting features as well. At the bust line lies a ruffle made of the silk lining that is about four inches wide and runs from left to right possibly to enhance the bosom. There is boning that extends from below the bust line to the waist on the seams inside the bodice. Inside the skirt slightly below the knee, there is a strip of fabric that extends from the left seam to the right seam and thought to have been draped behind the legs to constrain the woman's gait length.
