8916 RSC-PW-1 Photography Sheet of 9 color photos of the Monroe Subdistrict 8 school in Walnut, Iowa, which now is used as a museum for the Walnut Historical Society. Photo #1 shows the front of the school, including the school bell on a pole and a water pump. Photo #2 shows 2 shelves of objects that would've been used in the school including a baseball, glove, and bat, a white ball, a pair of horseshoes, and a pair of white roller-skates. Photo #3 shows another 2 shelves that are holding a series of lunch boxes, a bucket, three metal cups, and a white crock acting as a drink dispenser with a tap. Photo #4 shows the washroom with wood paneling on the walls, a small, simple rectangular mirror, and a large, white basin next to a white and orange striped towel.  Photo #5 shows the large black wood furnace surrounded by a basket of corn cobs and a bucket of coal. 8917 RSC-PW-2A Photograph Sheet of 4 color photos of the Big Grove school (Garner #3) outside Walnut, Iowa. It is preserved as part of the Big Grove Village, though it was possibly moved to this location from near Council Bluffs. The photos, from top left to right, are: Photo #1: the white, wooden schoolhouse with a bell in the bell tower. The school has 3 windows on the side visible to the camera and a simple yellow door with a small window above it. Photo #2: a blue and white striped ceramic crock with a tap and a ceramic cup wired underneath the tap with metal piping running below the desk on which it all sits. Photo #3: A wallpapered wall of the classroom with a hurricane oil lamp hanging on it. Below it is a bench with several metal buckets, one of which is labeled "lard." Photo #4: A corner of the classroom with a chalkboard and desk with a globe, several books, flowers, and an orrery (solar system tool). 8945 RSC-TY-1 Drawing This paper has a drawing of the 3rd Building of Excelsior School in Lenox township in Taylor County, Iowa. It was sold in 1946 for $500 and torn down. The drawing is of the East side of the building and was drawn by Sylvia J. Schulte in 1994. She makes note of the coal shed on the Northwest corner of the school that was attached to the building, the cement foundation which was in place from 1912-1946, as well as the cement foundation beneath the steps on the porch, the cedar shingles, and the chimney. She drew this in blue ink and did shading with pencil, and also attached a plastic American flag to the front of the porch in the drawing. RSC-TY-1 (Drawing) image
8946 RSC-TY-2 Photograph This paper has a photocopy, which has been drawn over in ink and pencil, of the 3rd building of the Excelsior School House in Taylor County, Iowa from 1912-1946. Handwriting at the top of the photo indicates that this was the south side of the building and that there was a transom above the door.  RSC-TY-2 (Photograph) image
8947 RSC-TY-3 Paper This paper has a photocopy of the Lenox No. 3 School's (Excelsior) in Taylor County, Iowa first building from 1859-1880. E. Henry Brockschink is siting on the steps, behind him was Bertha Brecht (Cramer). From Left to Right: standing in the long row: (Unknown), Teacher, Matilda Vette (Mrs. William Bierman), Amilda Scholeman (Mrs. Frank Conklin), Annie Schleuter, (3 Unknown children), Henry Bierman, Arthur Brockschink, (Unknown), (first name unknown) Jones, (first name unknown) Jones. The photograph was taken either in 1879 or 1880.  This school was 4 miles south and 1/4 mile east of Norway, Iowa. The school was built in 1859 and had been used for church services by members of Jasper Colony (Swedenborgians) from 1859-1880, for storage, and had been the home of Charles and Minnie Uthoff, and was eventually torn down in 1976.  RSC-TY-3 (Paper) image
8948 RSC-Virginia-1 Book "John Trimbles book. Began February the 1st A.D. 1797. Numeration Tables Copybook." Handwritten book of lecture notes and exercises bound with thread. Pages toward the end include personal financial notes from the 1850s, written in blue ink. The names John, Thomas, and William Trimble are all written on the inside cover and first page.

8956 RSC-Wisconsin-3 Diploma Diploma of Honor awarded to Florence Drecher for being neither tardy nor absent from school while three large certificates of award were being merited and receieved. Given at Black River Falls, Wisconsin on March 10, 1914.

8977 RSC-Wisconsin-24 Certificate American Hotel Training School in Milwaukee Wisconsin. "This is to certify that Agnes Mary Steinkohff has been a student in the General Hotel Course 6 and has satisfactorily completed the course of study, has been exaimed and found duly qualified in the subjects of the course and has been awarded this CERTIFICATE as an acknowledgmeent of thorough knowledge and proficiency and in recommendation of acquirements. In witness whereof we have hereunto affixed our signatures and seal at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this 27 day of November 1941." Signed by principal and secretary. 
8978 RSC-Wisconsin-25 Diploma "Wisconsin Young People's Reading Circle Auspices Wisconsin Teachers' Association Be it known that Edward Steinkopff having satisfactorily completed the reading prescribed by the State Reading Circle Board for the Gram. Division, 2 Year, is hereby granted this DIPLOMA as evidence of worthy endeavor and as a token of the value of good tastes and habits in reading. The recipient is entitled to a seal to be attached hereunto for each additional year of reading done under the auspices and with the approval of the WISCONSIN YOUNG PEOPLE'S READING CIRCLE. 8979 RSC-Wisconsin-26 Diploma Common School Diploma, State of Wisconsin. "This certifies that Edward Steinkopff has completed the Course of Study prescribed for the Common Schools of Wisconsin, and is therefore entitled to receive this DIPLOMA Given at Oconto, Oconto County, Wisconsin, this 29 day of May A.D. 1918. Specicla Honor No. 9." Signed by Ellen B. McDonald, County Superintendent of Schools. W.M. Welch Diploma House, Chicago. 
8980 RSC-Wisconsin-27 Booklet Booklet titled "Spencerian System of Penmanship," from the American Educational Series, by P. R. Spencer. Published by Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor, and Co., 138 & 140 Grant St. New York (and Chicago). The name handwritten on the front is Maggie Borah, from the State Normal school (Platteville, Wisconsin). Inside the front cover it says, "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1873, by Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor & Co., in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington." It contains 22 lined pages with practice sentences to copy and space to write. The covers are blue with black text. The back cover features and advertisement for other standard textbooks and an image of cherubs writing with giant fountain pens. 
8981 RSC-Wisconsin-28 Booklet 1864 booklet titled "Spencerian System of Practical Penmanship." By. P. R. Spencer. Other text on the cover includes several names of other Spencers, the retail price - 15 cts., and "Entered, according to Act of Congress, in the year 1864, by Ivison, Phinney, Blakeman, & Co., in the Clerk's Office for the Southern District of New York." Handwritten is the name Meifs Maggie Borah, Class B, and Platteville (Wisconsin) State Normal School. All text is black, but several pages also have some exercises written in purple ink. The covers are green and feature decorative borders, graphic, and fonts. The front cover has a graphic of a government building and a leaf border; the back has a simple line border and a graphic of several fountain pen tips.
