38101 RSC-Ohio-147 Certificate Teacher's certificate from 1892. It reads, "Teacher's Certificate. By the Authority of the State of Ohio. The Perry County Board of Examiners Certify that Albert Bell has exhibited satisfactory evidence of a good moral character, has an adequate knowledge of the Theory and Practice of Teaching, and is qualified to teach Orthography, Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography, Eng. Grammar, U. S. History, Physiology, Narcotics, (space left to add more subjects, but it left blank). Given at New Lexington, Ohio, and is valid for One Year from this 6th day of August A. D. 1892. Fourth Class Certificate." Signed by three board of examiner members: Janresle Fawler, G. W. De Song, and H. Battan. At the very bottom left a handwritten note reads, "almost a 2-year grade." The certificate was printed in black ink by The Cleveland Ptg. & Pub. Co., Cleveland, Ohio. The page has mild ornamentation, most of which is surrounding the top banner, "Teacher's Certificate," including a detailed crest showing a handheld oil lamp, books, and a globe that is wrapped in a ribbon saying, "Common Schools, The Hope of Our Country." 
38102 RSC-Ohio-148 Certificate Promotion to high school certificate from 1927. It reads, "Jefferson Davis School. Elizabeth Cissna, Having completed the Course of Study prescribed for the District of Schools of Dayon, Ohio, is granted this Certificate of Promotion to the High School." Signed by the superintendent, Paul C. Statson, president, Dr. H. B. Millhoff, principal, Elizabeth K. Brown, and principal, Mary E. Anshutz. The certificate is printed in black ink, has very minimal ornamentation, and has a large black and white photo of the large, three-story high school. "Elizabeth Cissna, 1927" is handwritten on the back. 
38103 RSC-Ohio-149 Poster  Two posters taped together advertising a school. The left one is white and the right one is green, but they're otherwise identical.  Their message reads, "SCHOOL. A Select School will be taught in the Union School Building, Pataskala, Ohio, beginning MONDAY, AUG. 24, 1874 and continuing eleven weeks. This will give an opportunity to those wishing to teach during the Winter to review the Common Branches. Classes will be formed in Oil Painting, Drawing, and such other branches as a sufficient number of students may desire. GOOD BOARD AT REASONABLE RATES. Those wishing to board themselves can obtain rooms suitable. Tuition in High School per Term, - $6.00. Tuition in Intermediate, " " - - 3.50. S. M. LECKRONE, B. A., Principal. Pataskala, O., July 16, '74. MISS LIZZIE MILLER, Assistant." The posters, both 31cm x 24.5cm, were printed with black ink, no ornamentation aside from two line breaks, and multiple bold fonts.   
38104 RSC-Ohio-150 Certificate Elementary School Life Certificate for Ohio given to Helen Carrol, on June 26th, 1923 at Columbus, Ohio. It has a gold stamp from the state board of school examiners and signatures from the superintendent of public instruction, the president of the state board of school examiners, and several clerks. It had very minor decoration aside from an illustration near the center that shows several American flags, a stone schoolhouse, a government building, and a valley with bundles of a crop.  From top to bottom it reads, "In the name and by the Authority of The State of Ohio, The State Board of School Examiners hereby issues this Elementary School Life Certificate to Helen Carroll, Who has been found to possess the Requisite Scholarship, and who has exhibited satisfactory evidence of Good Moral Character, Ability, and Experience as an Elementary School Teacher. This certificate of Qualifications shall supersede the necessity of any and all other elementary examinations by any Board of Examiners and shall be valid in all the Elementary Schools of any School District in the State of Ohio. Dated at Columbus, Ohio this 26th day of June, nineteen hundred twenty-three." It is also marked as a state provisional certificate. 
38105 RSC-Ohio-151 Certificate Teacher's Common School Certificate from Fairfield County, Ohio.  It was given to John C, Phelps at Lancaster, OH, on April 18th, 1896. The bottom of the paper lists his exam results and has the signatures of the president and two clerks of the board of school examiners. It has a blue decorative border. All text is in either blue or red. Printed by Ohio Eagle Job Print, Lancaster, O.  From top to bottom it reads, "No. 52. 5th Class, 12 Months. Teacher's COmon School Certificate. Fairfield County, Ohio. The Undersigned school Examiners of Fairfield County, Ohio, having examined John C. Phelps Hereby Certify that he possesses an adequate knowledge of the Theory and Practice of Teaching, and is qualified to teach Orthography, Rading, writing, Arithmetic, Geography, English Grammar, United States History, Physiology and Hygiene, Stimulants and Narcotics, and Civil Gov. and that he has furnished satisfactory evidence of Good Moral Character. This Certificate to be valid for 12 months from date. Given at Lancaster, Ohio, and dated this 18th day of April A. D. 1896. Signed by G. M. Morris, president, WM Dunn, clerk, and S. J. Wolfe."

It has a small floral border and several small icons through the page all printed in dark blue. The bottom of the page has his grades for several different subjects.  From top to bottom it reads, "Certificate for Admission to High school. We, the undersigned School Examiners of Fairfield County, having examined John C. Phelps of No. 7 school, Bloom township, Fairfield County, find that he possesses an adequate knowledge of Orthography, Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography, Physical Geography, English Grammar, United States history, Physiology and Hygiene and is entitled to admission to any High School in Fairfield County, Ohio. 38110 RSC-Ohio-155 Certificate Handwritten teacher's certificate from Janesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, 1868 for J. G. Hamilton. His test scores in seven subjects and overall grade are written in the middle of the page. Written on a lined piece of notebook paper, folder in horizontal fourths.  From top to bottom it reads: "No. 394 School Examiners Office, Janesville, O. The Board of School Examiners of Muskingum County Ohio Certify That they have examined J. G. Hamilton and find him qualified to teach the following branches: orthography, reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, English grammar, and theory and practice. We also certify that he has furnished satisfactory evidence of good moral character. This Certificate to be valid for 18 months if not sooner revoked. Aug. 15, 1868." Signed by examiners G. J. Newman, A. S. Wiles, and S. C. Marshall. 
38111 RSC-Ohio-156 Certificate High school record transcript for Lena Myers from the Martins Ferry school, Belmont County, Ohio, 1909. It lists each class she took, the textbooks used, amount of work done, number of weeks per course, and her grade. The bottom is signed by the superintendent, principal, president, and a clerk. From top to bottom is reads: "Certificate of High School Record. This Certifies that Lena Myers was regularly graduated in the Scientific Course on June 3rd, 1909, from a Public High School maintained by the Board of Education of Martins Ferry School District, Belmont County, Ohio, that at the date of said graduation said High School was according to law a regularly recognized High School of the First Grade and that the following is a correct statement of the work done by said graduate." 38112 RSC-Ohio-157 Certificate Teaching certificate for Helen Edgeter, from Dayton, Ohio, 1887. In the bottom left corner, it lists her exam results from ten subjects. The bottom right corner has the signatures of three school examiners. Printed by Sweetman Printer, Dayton, Ohio. It has a decorative border and one illustration near the top that shows several items relating to school subjects like a compass, glove, books, etcetera. The back reads "Helen Edgeter, Expires May 28, 1890." From top to bottom it reads: "City Board of School Examiners of Dayton, Ohio, Do Hereby Certify That Helen Edgeter has represented satisfactory testimonials of good moral character, and sustained an examination which gives evidence that she possesses an adequate knowledge of the Theory and Practice of Teaching, and is qualified to teach Reading, Writing, Orthography, Arithmetic, Geography, English Grammar, English Literature, and United States History. This Certificate to be valid for the period of three year from this 28th day of May 1887." Signed H. G. Marshall, J. J. Burn, and Chas. L. Loos Jr.

38115 RSC-Ohio-160 Report Report from the clerk of the Board of Education for the Troy Jr. High School, Township district, Geauga County, Ohio, 1905. It gives information on the superintendent (B. A. Gates of Welshfield, OH), principal (Bessie Douglas of Welshfield, OH)), teachers, buildings (1), apparatuses (science tools), and number of books in the school as well as what classes are taught, which books are used for each topic, how many weeks are given for each subject, number of recitations per week, and length of the recitation period. The back lists the curriculum broken down by year (four years total) and how many weeks the school was in session during the year (32 weeks). Signed, J. A. Welsh, clerk of the Board of Education, P.O. Welshfield, Ohio. March 28th, 1905.

38126 RSC-Ohio-171 Contract Copy of an 1887 teacher contract between teacher and superintendent C. B. Metcalf and the board of directors for the Special School District No. 9 Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio. The contract states that Metcalf will continue to teach and act as superintendent for another two years, starting September 1887, but is only required to teach the high school department. The agreed upon salary was $1100 per year. Signed on July 9th, 1887, by O. A. Ballard (president), John H. Shull, and D. F. Winders of the board of directors for the school. Document is handwritten in black ink on a piece of lined paper. 
38127 RSC-Ohio-172 Agreement 1851 agreement between teacher Thomas Berry and three members of the board of directors for school No. 9 in Laurel township, Hocking County, Ohio, to teach an English school (reading, writing, and arithmetic) for the term of three months or seventy-two school days, starting at 8am and ending at 4pm each day. The agreed upon wage was ten dollars per month or thirty dollars in total. Signed on October 17th, 1851, by school directors William Holmes, John Brehm, and Amos, Longshore. The document is handwritten in black ink. 
38128 RSC-Ohio-173 Roster Handwritten list of the class of 1897 for the Central High School, Columbus, Ohio. Includes which students went to Ohio State University (marked in red), who became teachers, who was married (including their spouse's name), and who had passed away by the time this list was made. 
38129 RSC-Ohio-174 Roster Two pages of a 1912 class roster from G. S. Wallace of the No. 11 Mead township school, Lemont County, Ohio. Titled "Enumeration Return to the Clerk of the Board of Education." It lists his students and their parents, age, and gender. The class had roughly sixty-six students from thirty different families. The ages range from six to twenty. All handwriting was done in pencil. 
38130 RSC-Ohio-175 Register 1846 register of students and their attendance. "Daily Register of Nathan Carpenter, Teacher in dis. No. 4 Liberty Township, Delaware County, Ohio. School commending Nov. 30, 1846." This class had roughly forty-five students. 
38131 RSC-Ohio-176 Contract 1833 handwritten agreement between teacher James Kerr and the householders of No. 4 school district in Baughman township, Ohio. The contract explains that Kerr will teach an English school for the term of four months, starting on the first Monday of December 1833. The agreed upon wage was $1.75 per student. Signed on November 15th, 1833, by several members of the board including William and Margaret Edgar, John Baughman, John Schilling, Daniel Walter, and James Marshall. 
38132 RSC-Ohio-177 Note Handwritten letter on a slip of paper about examining a school and teacher. "Baughman March 8th 1834. Having convien'd at the School house for examining the school taught by James Kerr and we find the scholars to be well taught and the employers to be well satisfied and the teacher to be of a good character as teacher." Signed by three directors: William Edgar, John Baughman, and John Shilling. 
38133 RSC-Ohio-178 Contract 1833 handwritten teacher's contract for an English school in Ohio. It reads: "Marietta, February 26th 1833. To patrons of common school in the town of Marietta. The undersigned proposes to teach a common English school in district school house No. 2 of said town, for the term of one quarter, to commence on the 18th of March next. He returns the warmest thanks for the liberal patronage, which he has heretofore received. Terms of Tuition: For those studying Spelling, Reading, & Writing or either of those branches $2.00 per qr. For those studying Arithmetick, English Grammar & Geography or either of those branches $2.50 per qr. All scholars chargeable from this time of entering school, unless in case of sickness." Signed, John H. Gilmore.   
38134 RSC-Ohio-179 Hymn Two handwritten hymns. The left column has the original hymns in a different language (Ojibwe?), the right column has the English translations. The top hymn is titled "Hymn. [illegible] Mr. W. Coy", the bottom one is titled "Hymn - Mr. Meeker." This paper was included with several others dating to 1833-1839 from Ohio discussing an English school. The back has a prayer transcribed by John Dugard. Below are the translations, "//" is used in place of line breaks. Hymn 1:  "Jesus has died // To prevent us from descending beneath // Jesus has been merciful // I thank you my father God. // Jesus I will constantly love, // Constantly, all he directs me // Entirely all I will do. // I desire to be holy like Jesus was // To Jesus I continually pray. // I think of him constantly. // When I sleep he takes care of me // When I am awake he takes care of me. // If I die he will take me // Above to that happy place // Continually I’ll remain with Jesus to whom I go, // No more forever will I grieve." 38135 RSC-Ohio-180 Contract Handwritten contract between teacher James W. Kerr and the board of directors for the No. 7 school, Chippewa Township, Ohio stating that Kerr will teach an English school for the term of three months starting Nov. 18th, 1839 for the salary of twenty dollars per month. It reads: "This agreement made and concluded this 8th day of November A.D. 1839. By and between James W. Kerr of the first part, and the school directors of the seventh school district in Chippewa township of the second part. 1st. James W. Kerr does agree to teach an English School in said district for the term of three months commencing on the eighteenth day of Nov. 1839. And he further agrees or pledges himself to keep lawful and customary hours reserving every other Saturday to himself; and to use his best endeavors to facilitate the improvement of the pupils committed to his care. 2nd. And we the undersigned directors do agree to pay said Kerr Twenty dollars per month, at the expiration of the above term, and to furnish a good school room and good fuel and [section is crossed out - cause the scholars to make the fires every morning during school and] comply with the above terms. The said Kerr does agree to teach three months [section is crossed out - according to the school law] 26 days to the month." 38136 RSC-Ohio-181 Letter Notification of failure to earn a teacher's certificate for Emil E. Albright of Fredericktown, Pickaway County, Ohio. Given on Feb. 14, 1910, at Circleville, Ohio. It gives the student's exam scores, states that Albright failed to earn the necessary grade, and lists exam grade requirements for earning elementary, high school, and professional certificates.

The subjects graded include reading, spelling, writing, arithmetic, English, grammar, geography, U. S. history, physiology, drawing, agriculture, music, and rhetorical. The average grade was 96%.

38150 RSC-Ohio-194 Postcard Blank postcard. The front has a black and white photo of the Parker's Academy near New Richmond, Ohio. This was the school General Ulysses S. Grant attended. The photo shows a brick schoolhouse (possibly painted white?) with a bell tower in the center and four open windows on either side of the doorway. The trees are bare and the ground has a little snow. The back has no message, but does have a stamp of  "Kraemer Art, Cincinatti" in the upper right-hand corner.

Willis is marked as the officer. Printed by the Bixler Pt'G. Co., Canal Dover. Both pages have a gold, slightly embossed border, and the cover has a gold icon around the word "souvenir." The second page lists student's names. The pages are bound together with red and brown thread tied into a bow in the top left corner. 
38163 RSC-Ohio-207 Souvenir 1909 souvenir booklet from the Highland School District No. 1, Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio. The cover has an oval, cut-out photo of a woman as well as colorful illustrations including the American flag and a globe. The bottom reads, "Not for School but for Life we Learn." The second pages lists the students, the teacher, Grace Appleman, and the schoolboard including the president, Thomas McMillen. The rest of the pages have a poem titled "Teacher's Greetings" and several illustrations. The booklet is bound with string ending in a tassel. 5 pages. The teacher was Jessie Mae Mizer and the president was Jacob Huprich. The covers are marbled with brown, red, and blue. The front cover says "School Day Remembrance" in gold, embossed lettering. Pages four and five list the school, staff, and student information including a roster. All other pages have a red, blue, or brown floral illustration and a poem. The booklet is tied together by a pink string. Eight pages in total. Printed by F. A. Owen Pub. Co., Dansville. N. Y. 
38165 RSC-Ohio-209 Program 1886 commencement program from the New Lexington High School, Perry County, Ohio. The cover has a card insert that lists the info and as an embossed, gold floral design. It explains that this ceremony was the third for the school and was held in a local church. Under this insert is a smaller card with "Bertha Hallowell" written in pencil. The first page lists the principal, R. B. Barrett, and the school board president, Dr. L. M. Greene. The second page gives the order of the program and names each person involved. The back cover says "Not Finished, But Begun" above a list of four graduates: Bessie Horsman, Bertha Hallowell, Abbie Brabson, and Fred W. Kelly. The white booklet is inside a white envelope labeled "school."
